Is There Some Tips about Free avast! 4 Home Edition ?
« on: December 11, 2007, 09:46:06 AM »
 :)

Hej - I am New Member from Copenhagen in Denmark
My name is Rudolph
(With a Red Nose  ;)

I do not know much about avast! Free Home edition, as I just downloaded it yesterday...
Is there some "Tricks" one can do ...
I mean I used standard settings - But is there something that is wise to do by customizing it -

Or shall I leave it like it is ?
(What is the safest, fastest way avast! work) ?

I use Firefox 98%

Just wonder as I am a Newbie.

Greetings From Rudolph

First tip leave avast on default settings until you get to know it. This provides a good balance between protection and performance.

Browse the avast help file, from the Simple User Interface or Start, All Programs, avast! Antivirus, Help or C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ENGLISH\HELP\help.chm.

Browse the forums, especially the sticky topics at the top of each of the forums, not to mention the avast file. They provide a wealth of information to help you get the best from avast.

Some other thing which may help us to help you.
What is your windows version ?
What is your firewall ?
What email program do you use ?
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

OK with win2k, XP or Vista the resident protection for your Browser/s and email program are transparent so you don't have to do anything with the settings. With older OSes some things have to be set-up manually.

By default, the windows firewall in Vista doesn't have outbound protection enabled, if you do enable it there is no help in configuring the outbound protection. Vista Firewall Control, check out this topic for some user friendly help for the Vista Firewall, Outbound protection, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=30234.0

Any malware that manages to get past your defences will have free reign to connect to the internet to either download more of the same, pass your personal data (sensitive or otherwise, user names, passwords, keylogger retrieved data, etc.) or open a backdoor to your computer, so outbound protection is essential.

There are many skins for avast, from the Simple User Interface right click on the skin or click the menu icon and click Select Skin and then the Get more skins from....... (takes you to the link Bluesman gave), I too use the avist by Sasha skin.

Meeeemmm - Is the skin also for Free Avast 4 Home Edition ?
I could not see "Select skin" in my menu ...
I downloaded the skin you recommended - to the desk ...
And then I did not know how to install it.

In Ordinary Settings there is also something to mark with Explorer...
As I use FF most should I mark it ?

I ask and ask ... ::)

Sure. It's only for the free. The Professional (Advanced) interface is not skinned.

I could not see "Select skin" in my menu ...
Open (run) avast antivirus and right click the interface (skin).
Select skin is the option.

And then I did not know how to install it.
Double-click it only.

It's Windows Explorer not Internet Explorer.

Yes all the skins on the site are free to use with avast Home.

Whilst you don't see Select Skin in the menu, it may be because of the language version you are using, but it should be in the same location, as in my image.

Double click on the downloaded .asws file it should run and install the skin.

Nothing to do if you want to use firefox or IE, avast doesn't specifically use IE it should use your default browser, but I have found links in avast that when you click them it opens IE and boy does that annoy me.

Hej DavidR !

"Double click on the downloaded .asws file it should run and install the skin"
... Yes .. It did open and - Nice "Windows Media Player Look" !
So I should use this on the desktop - And not the Icon in the Status Bar (Who have not changed)

Nothing to do if you want to use firefox or IE, avast doesn't specifically use IE it should use your default browser, but I have found links in avast that when you click them it opens IE and boy does that annoy me.

... Fine then (And I have nothing against IE)

It  said :
URDB database not done. - What is that?

Hej Tech !

... Yes ? (Too bad for the Advanced then ...
;-)

"Open (run) avast antivirus and right click the interface (skin).

Yes - it did happen on the file on my desktop -
Thought it was in the little a on the status .

"It's Windows Explorer not Internet Explorer"
... Oh, I misunderstood it ;-)
Should I mark all 5 places about that, then?

--- Forgive me for all my questions ...
