Email Guardian - First Impression

I've just set up Email Guardian for my Gmail account, which is usually accessed from one of my two laptops using eM Client. After setting it up using my main laptop, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I didn't have to do anything on the backup laptop, but that has raised a question in my mind - how would I set this up on a family member's computer who would obviously be using a different e-mail account than the one associated with my Avast account? Would I for instance, just not link their Avast software to my Avast account and simply activate it by putting in the licence code into the app? When using Gmail, I note that Email Guardian adds a tag at the top of the e-mail, which is a nice touch. I wonder if it does anything like that with other e-mail services?

One other question, this time relating to e-mail scanning - is it possible to switch off the Avast footer that is attached to scanned e-mails and if so, how?

Disable the Avast signature for outgoing emails
Open Avast Antivirus, and go to ☰ Menu ▸ Settings.

• Select Protection ▸ Core Shields.
• Scroll down to Configure shield settings and click the tab for Mail Shield.
• Untick the box next to Add a signature to the end of sent emails.

Email Guardian, available in Avast One and Avast Premium Security, scans your incoming emails when you check them using a web browser.
You can protect up to 5-6 email accounts depending on the application you are using.

Yes, I knew all that, but what I haven't tried yet is setting it up on a family member's computer. I'm assuming that Avast gets its information from the mail account being used and not the Avast account - is that correct?

Hi, EG developer here.
You get it just right: the emails being "checked" can be completely unrelated to your Avast account - you can turn EG for you, your family etc., basically for any account you know a password to (I can imagine a situation when some family member approaches me and just enters the password for his account, giving me a right to enable/disable EG for him but nothing else). Or, as you said, you can login to their computer with your Avast account which will, on the other hand, give them the right to manage all the mailboxes used in EG.

Thanks for the reply. When you say "password", do you mean the password that a family member uses to log in to their Gmail account or do they need to generate another app password when they are logged in to their account and then give that to me to enter into Avast once it's up and running on their computer?

So from the link, it looks like I shall have to follow the same procedure on a family member's laptop. I'll keep this in mind if they decide they want me to add this security feature. Thanks for your assistance with this.

it depends on your preferences... you can follow the procedure on your computer with your family member email account. The their mailbox is added to the Email Guardian and being protected. But the statistics will be shown for the account that was logged when you added (onboarded) the mailbox to EG.

tl;dr - the EG settings are stored and bind to your my.avast account. You can add any mailbox (even family member) but then you'll see the statistics. And the onboarding (adding) requires right credentials.


You should know that each mailbox can be onboarded just once == once you onboard your friend's mailbox from your account then the friend cannot onboard from their account later...
Please be aware that there may be some prerequisities required on the side of the email provider to make the EG working.

Sorry but my first impression is quite negative.  I have just spent the last half hour trying to set up my Gmail account, which was unsuccessful. It didn't say why, just took me back to the very beginning to try again from the start.  It's much too complex and way too many steps to be useable. Also my primary email account said it was not available, so it would not protect the account I use 95% of the time.

With Gmail, you need to,
1. ensure that you are using IMAP instead of POP
2. that you have two-step verification enabled
3. that you have generated an App Password for Email Guardian
Please double-check to see if you have the above in your Gmail account, and then try to Set up Email Guardian via Avast Antivirus again.
