 Hello, how do I identify legitimate avast apps from fake avast apps? I have downloaded an app called "avast security and privacy" as well as "avast one" - are they both legitimate avast apps? They look slightly different. There are other ones which are clearly fakes.

Where are you downloading the applications from? Could you provide a screenshot of the apps you think are fake?
"avast security and privacy" is Avast Mobile Security and "avast one" is the latest application from Avast. They are two separate applications.
On Google Play or the Apple App Store ensure the developer is Avast.
