SMTP Timeout error for Gmail in Thunderbird

I installed Avast One on my Windows 10 laptop yesterday and am getting the good old SMTP Timeout error when sending gmail in Thunderbird. All the online help refers to the old Avast, which has an actual menu that lets you turn off virus checks in outgoing email. I can't find anything like this in Avast One. What am I missing and how do I fix this problem? Thanks!

Open Avast One, then select  Explore ▸ Email Guardian ▸ Open Email Guardian and untick "Scan outbound emails" More information here: https://support.avast.com/en-ww/article/141/#pc
