BSOD every time Avast does a smart scan (cpuz153_x64.sys)
« on: July 25, 2022, 11:56:21 AM »
Hi,

I resently get BSOD everytime Avast does a smart scan. (so just after restarting windows or when I do a manual smart scan)
Beneath the BSOD it says that cpuz153_x64.sys is causing it. This Cpuz153_x64 is a part of the corsair Icue4 software (PCU watercooling version: 4.25.155)

Does anyone have a solution on fixing this?
I tried to skip the scan on all corsair software maps by making exceptions in the Avast settings. But still having this BSOD.

Simce circa July 19-20 I have also been getting a BSOD whenever
I run an AVG smart scan. In my case it always occurs with the
driver Sbiedrv.sys which is the Sandboxie driver. The BSOD
always shows that a SYSTEM SERVICE EXCEPTION occurred in
Sbiedrv.sys

I have tried all available versions of SB with the same result.

If I remove SB there are no further BSODs from a Smart Scan.

If I keep SB and remove AVG there are no further BSODs with
MS Defender active. Scans using Defender, Malwarebytes (on-demand),
Trend Micro Housecall, etc. all run with no issues when AVG is removed.

For me, the incompatable combination is with AVG Internet Security
and Sandboxie, and began some time around the 19th or 20th of July.
Prior to that time I was able to run AVG Smart Scans at least once
a day with no issues even with SB installed and active. I had done
so daily for months.

Windows version in use is Win10 21H2

I reported the issue to David Xanatos who supports Sandboxie,
and he was unable to reproduce the issue using SB and AVG IS
running in a Virtual Machine.

Thank you all for reporting, could you please update your Avast AV to latest version (VPS 220726-00 from today morning) and let us know whether those BSODs stop happening.

No joy. Unfortunately I get the same result of a BSOD from Sbiedrv.sys
during an AVG Smart Scan with VPS 220726-2

It always occurs near the start of the malware scan step of the
Smart Scan, after scanning PID 0 and about at the point when it
usually scans services (SVC).

Please update to VPS 220726.6.

Excellent! So far, so good. After installing VPS 220726-6
and reinstalling Sandboxie, I successfully ran a Smart Scan
with AVG Internet Security 22.6.3242 (build 22.6.7355.732)
without any problems. No BSODs so far. Thanks for the quick
response and (apparent) resolution. I will continue to monitor
it and if the problem with the Sbiedrv.sys BSOD returns I will
post a status update.
