Unable to install or update Avast online
« on: August 01, 2022, 09:06:14 PM »
It just happens on one of my Windows 10 computers (not on the others) that Avast cannot properly connect to the internet. Online installer doesn't work, so I have to use offline installer. Then it does not update. Even if the virus definition is days old, it still says it's the latest definition. Also, I tried to add new languages, without success. Adding new components, failed.

I tried everything I could, e.g. switching off the firewall, clean reinstall, etc., but no luck to fix it.

Any idea what else can help? Thanks!

Edit:

Thank r@vast for finding out the solution:

1. Run Elevated Command Prompt
Click on the Start menu.
Type: cmd in the Windows search bar.
Right-click and choose "Run as Administrator", and allow elevation request.
2. Type: netsh winsock reset and hit Enter.
3. Type: netsh int ip reset and hit Enter again.
4. Restart the computer.

Just to give experts some clue, I attach the screenshot and the Update.log file.
I clicked on the button to update today, but it still stays at July 26.

What other security related programs are you using? (Malwarebytes?)

Thanks!

Nothing... Avast is the only one. I also have checked that Windows defender is off.

What other security related programs are you using? (Malwarebytes?)

According to the log file, the problem may have something to do with DNS. But I have a perfectly working Avast installed on another computer connected to the same WiFi, so I'm confused...

Does this help?  https://support.avast.com/en-eu/article/repair-antivirus/#mac

Thanks! I already tried this and it did not work. I even tried to uninstall Avast using the official clear tool and manually delete every remaining Avast registry item, but such a clean re-install still does not help...

Do Avast technical group regularly read the posts in this forum?
It seems that the only hope is to wait for their next engine update? :-\
By the way, Avast has never been able to automatically update on my comupter, and I always had to click the update button manually...  Since a few days ago, even clicking the update button has stopped functioning

I've alerted Avast. Let's see if that helps.

I just found another problem which may be related.

If I click "Sign in to Avast account", the program will falsely claim that there is no internet connection (see the attached screenshot).

This particular problem might be solved by installing Avast in another directory. (The update problem still persists though)

My naive guess is that the origin of all these problems is related to Windows' access control and permissions. (I have been using an administrator account of Windows)

I've been experiencing the same sort of problems with my free AVAST. The internet works for everything else on my laptop, but no AVAST functions that require internet seem to work on my laptop.

This problem started for me sometime after 26/8/22, which is the date of my last successful AVAST update. Until then, AVAST was working well for me for over a decade.

Hi! I think you mean 26/7/22 ?
Not sure whether this problem has anything to do with the last engine update (or Windows update)...
Thanks for this information! At least now I know it's not just on my own computer 😂
