Google fails to react to various websites spreading malcode
« on: November 27, 2022, 01:49:36 PM »
The President of Video-lan speaks out on this issue:
President of VideoLAN here.
(info-source = https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33727981)
The issue is two-fold here:

- On Google Search, Google refuses to unlist websites that are clearly promoting adware, spyware and violating the brands of Open Source projects (VLC is not the only one impacted).

In addition, the ads reported are never deleted.

- On Google Chrome, the safe browsing team refuses to flag some websites, even after long explanations about what the binaries are doing. One of the reason is that "the binaries are too big" (sic.). The other reason, is that they scan only the installer, and of course, the installer downloads other things.
Google search and Google Safebrowsing, don't be bad.

But alternatives could sometimes even be worse for that matter:

Remember the WOT debacle, where a venture capitalist marketed all volunteer data out to the highest bidder. WOT never regained any credibility or trust after that.

Quite some detections lately, that soon go to be considered FPs (all coming from a Google or Google-related infrastructure).

Is there a pattern somewhere? Could this be based on setting up different filters?

This as abuse is being reported: https://www.abuseipdb.com/check/216.239.32.21

DDG from now on will block automatic Google sign-in pop-ups,
which uBlock even fails to block from time to time.

Again Google-ads pointing to malcode (stealer packages on free software), read:
https://isc.sans.edu/diary/29376

Example. A malcreant, that registered domain at markmonitor (2 detect): https://www.virustotal.com/gui/domain/baherlaker.online.com

Time for a good adblocker like uBlock. Users should not be without a good adblocker.
