Last december 5th, my PC on Windows 10 worked perfectly. Upon switch on, in december 6th, I was warned that Avast Premium Security (paid version) has been updated. My computer is unusable since. Icons on the taskbar have been replaced by generic icons and when I click on them I have an error message saying the is no association between the file and any program. Moreover the wallpaper disappears periodically as well as the icons; the processor is overly used, according to the noise of the fans.
I tried to contact the Avast support twice, to no avail, apart an automatic reply.
Did anyone had the same problem as me ?
Do I need to uninstall Avast Premium Security ? If so, as I have Avast Passwords, is it likely that I will lose all my passwords ?

Repair & Clean Install of Avast -> https://goo.gl/t7aJGq
Repair Avast:
Open the Avast User Interface > Menu > Settings > Troubleshooting > Repair App. > Restart the Computer or,
Control Panel> Program and Features (Add/remove program)>Select Avast> Select Repair. Reboot when completed
https://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB204

If Repair doesn't fix the problem, try the following:
If your Avast settings are not the default settings and you want them restored after the Clean Install, follow this before removing Avast.

Just out of curiosity not related to OP's issue, I've always used the Avast uninstall tool to completely uninstall Avast from the start, meaning I don't uninstall it "regularly" from the control panel and then run the Avast clear tool after; I just use the Avast clear tool from the start. I noticed issues with display drivers and occasionally some other hiccups after uninstalling Avast "normally" so I just went with the uninstall tool to avoid that.

Have I been doing it wrong the whole time? Because i've had to uninstall and reinstall Avast a few times over the last couple of months and i've always done it that way.

I've simply posted what I've always done and what recommended.
Don't know if just using the removal tool is sufficient or not.

I was going by what I saw here where it says:

We recommend using the Avast Uninstall Tool to completely remove Avast Free Antivirus from your PC if uninstallation via the Start menu did not work

So maybe the steps you use are "you should use the uninstall tool afterwards just in case" as opposed to "You should do both steps and only both steps.

My instructions and video show using the Ad-remove function in Windows followed by the use of the removal tool.
It's the way I have always done a removal. I've also never had a problem after following those instructions as laid out.
Hope that clarifies this matter for you.

I'm not denying your method doesn't work. Just wanted to make sure both methods work, which seems to be the case.
