As usual every type of program has it's own properties. But if you want help, you better give us more facts of what you really mean.
Avast gives you 2 opportunities to update: 1: searchmodule & viruschest, 2: program and you have to find out, what do you want within each term.
I have several machines with Windows XP SP3 and Win7 SP1 (you can see in my signature). So it's important, if you have a SP (service pack) or not!
Concerning Win XP & W7, I tested a lot and decided, not to update the Avast program higher than 10.4.2233 (free version) and you have to change the program properties
to update manually!
The search mod you have to tell
to update automatically and set a hook before 'stream update activation'!In this case: it's not important to have the last version of the Avast program installed!!! If the Avast search module & viruschest is updated by the streaming updates, your W7 will be safe!
