Avast! keeps wanting a reboot - help please!
« on: December 24, 2007, 09:46:26 PM »
Hello -

This may been covered in a prior post - if so I apologise.  I'm running Avast! Home on Windows XP.  Recently a scan found a Trojan Horse (I don't remeber which one).  After Avast! cleaned 2200 files the Trojan Horse left behind, it wanted to reboot every time it got an automatic update.  I uninstalled, rebooted, re-installed, and rebooted to no avail.  Every time it updates now I get a box saying that Avast! wants to reboot the computer - even on computer startup now too.

Anybody got any ideas????  Thanks

Operating system restart needed by avast message could be solved, in some systems, by deleting the file <avast>\setup\reboot.txt

If deleting reboot.txt doesn't stop the requests for reboot check this:
Check this registry entry (right after computer restart):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager, if it contains "PendingFileRenameOperations".
Check its contents and if there's only "reboot.txt" from avast4\setup folder, delete PendingFileRenameOperations, don't delete any other key.
Back-up (export) the registry key before you edit/delete, just in case.

Merry Christmas!

Hi there, sorry to butt in on this thread but I'm having the same problem whereby immediately upon bootup, an Avast box pops up saying "Operating System Restart Needed".

I have checked the registry key as suggested and it does have the "reboot.txt" listed. However, there are also 124 other files listed in there that are all in the "C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4" folder. Here are the first few entries listed so you can see the filenaming format:

\??\C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\reboot.txt

\??\C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4\Aav2.tmp
!\??\C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Aavm4h.dll
\??\C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4\Aav3.tmp
!\??\C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\AavmGuih.dll
\??\C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4\Aav4.tmp
!\??\C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\AavmRpch.dll
\??\C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4\AhR5.tmp
!\??\C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\AhResMai.dll

This has been happening for a little while now but I have just got round to trying to find out why.

Any ideas gratefully received,

Hope you all had a peaceful Christmas and wishing you all a happy new year.

Regards

Russell

Listed where? On the avast log?

Russell, we will need more information to be able to help you:
- Which OS are you using? Is it up to date?
- What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number?
- Do you use a firewall? Which one?
- Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system?
- Any other security programs that could interfere?

Hi,

The 124 other files are listed in the registry key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\PendingFileRenameOperations"

As to the other info you requested:

OS is Windows XP Professional SP2
Avast version 4.7 Home Edition Build Dec 2007 (4.7.1098)
Avast VPS file compilation Date - 26/12/2007
                File version 171226-0
Firewall is Comodo Firewall Pro (v3.0.14.276)

Other security software: Max Secure Spyware Detector v9.0.0.054 & Max Secure Registry Cleaner v6.0.0.032 although these have both been installed quite a while before the Avast problems.

Apart from Avast 4.7 there are no other antivirus programs installed.

The only one of these programs that has been updated recently is Comodo Firewall Pro where I updated from version 2 to version 3, however I can't say for sure that this coincided with the current problems. I know there were some compatibility issues between Comodo v3 and Avast, but I have updated the Comodo software to the version that was supposed to solve those issued. Also, I didn't see the Avast reboot issue listed as one of the issues.

I hope this information will provide some insight.

Regards

Russell

After you boot, do the 124 keep being listed there  :o ???
They shouldn't... Maybe you could export the registry key (backup) and delete that particular lines...
I don't have been problems with XP SP2 + Comodo 3 + avast...

Hi Tech -

I'm still having the problem also, after following your instructions.  Guess I'll live with it - it's just a nusence anyway - the program works fine with the glitch.  Hope you had a good Christmas.

That's weird - my files reappear after deleting them and rebooting.  Whatever that Trojan Horse was I picked up really did a job on me.  Wished I would have wrote it down.  Avast! killed it tho and now I don't have it in subsequent scans, but something causing this remains.

I have discovered the issue, at least for me, and it is not an Avast problem at all.  I tracked the reboot message to Adobe Acrobat Updater and resolved the issue by turning of the updater using msconfig>startup.  If you are uncomfortable with using msconfig, uninstalling and re-installing Adobe worked as well.

Moderators please post this to any additional threads I miss.

I confirm.
It's a bug.
It's an Avast-dialog box that recommend and ask to reboot one minute after reboot, And so on...
Who can we trust now ?

Adobe Acrobat Updater and resolved the issue by turning of the updater using msconfig>startup.
I have done this a long time ago, don't want too many things running at startup...
Anyway, it's a strange correlation (avast and Adobe), are you sure?

Yes, I'm sure but I should have been more specific in my reply.  My reboot message was generic, ie. it did not specify which program was advising the necessity for a reboot.  My apologies to those I sent in the wrong direction.
