Hi AnneLee
This is a description from the Avast Help File:
Test memory during application start-up. When avast! is starting, it checks the RAM memory for viruses. You can turn this checking off, which speeds up the avast! starting a bit yet decreases the chances of avast! catching a memory resident virus before it becomes destructive.
You can turn Memory Testing on/off via Right clicking the Avast tray Icon/ Select Program settings/Common
Windows 10 Pro | Intel I7 CPU | 16 Gig 2133 RAM | Avast beta 17.5.2295 | Firefox 54 b9(64-bit) | Cyberfox 52.1 | T-Bird 52.1.1 | SpyWareBlaster 5.5 | MalwareBytes 3.0.0.865 | WinPatrol 35.5.2 | GlassWire 1.2.100 | Cybereason Ransomfree 2.2.7 |  Pulla-dePlug Final!

If you keep avast residents on, i.e., the antivirus running, don't have to worry that much about memory scanning as avast will caught the virus before it could 'load' into memory (or in the exactly time it is trying to do so).
