Ransomware shield effectiveness with file protection turned off

One question, is ransomware shield protection(with enhanced protection mode) effective even with file protection disabled?

I mean, do the ransomware shield and the fle shield interact with each other or are they independent?

Thanks for this clarification that I knew anyway. 
Instead, I was wondering if for the correct functioning of the ransomware shield it is necessary that the file protection shield must also be necessarily active. 
So what if file shield somehow interacts with ransomware shield improving file protection, beyond signatures?

Yes don't switch off the File System Shield.

I don't even bother with the Ransomware Shield.  I'm a great believer of, if you don't back it up you have got to be prepared to lose it.  I make frequent backups to two external SSD drives.
