Is Mac Avast! Free? If not, what is?
« on: November 30, 2010, 04:35:12 PM »
Sorry for asking this in another thread. My stepmom does need an antivirus for her Mac, and I would like her to have Avast! or a good free alternative. Thank you.

Hey and Welcome

ClamXav is good but it doesn't have any realtime protection of what I know of. the only thing Mac needs is a good good firewall. Avast has free AV for Linux so you can try to install the linux avast but it only works as an on-demand scanner. (Mac OS is a Linux based OS)

Yeah, Clam is the only one that I know of.

here's a bit on Mac security though, for laughs or info.

Yes, the article is true. Honestly, the only reason why there isn't as much malware for mac machines, is the fact, that there was lack of interrest from bad guys, writing viruses. There's no extra security in Mac OS X, rather the opposite is true here.

btw. avast for mac has a 60 day trial, and we're going to have this product free as well (it's newer lite version).

PC tools's Iantivirus does a much better job than Sophos and does what it says it does. NO COMMERCIAL! but comodo has made an AV for make but it's still in beta. Don't forget that you (in general) are able to install any linux based software on mac; Mac is itself a Linux/Unix based OS.

If Avast! is going to have a free Mac version soon, I will have my stepmom wait for that. Will it have real-time protection or no?

Hallo,
the engine of this product is finsihed, but GUI part was postponed - some rework is needed, as stated by some QA testing. But, for sure, there is (well, will be - it's still not public) free version with realtime protections (fileshield, webshield, mailshield... etc.).
