Anti-spyware program?
« on: December 29, 2007, 10:21:36 AM »
Hi

I have the avast 4.7 professional edition on my computer. I read on the website that only the home edition (free edition) should install an anti-spyware program. Do I need to install an anti-spyware program also or is it already in the professional edition? (and if it already is in the software: Where can I find it?)

Cheers

There is no difference between engines in home and pro version.
And Avast! Antivirus is no antispyware program although it is able
to detect some kinds of spyware - look here: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
I recommend urgently to install an Anti-Spyware programm.
Look here http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=31842.0
where you can decide which program could be the best for you.

Thanks for the quick reply. Maybe the website should be changed so it would be clear you can better install an anti-spyware program too if you have the professional edition.

You can try AVG Antispyware; SUPERantispyware and/or Spyware Terminator to scan for spywares and trojans. All of them are compatible with avast.

Hello  ;)

I installed 'avast! Home Edition' yesterday and i really like it. I'm searching for a Antispyware-Tool which is free and which have a resident scanner. I like AVG Antispyware but as you know the resident scanner works only 30 days in trial version  :-\ So what about your experiences?

Thank you. I read that there is spyware in spyware terminator  :( Maybe 2 resident programs (avast / spyware terminator) will make problems?

Other possibility is the Starter version of Spyware Doctor that comes with Google Pack.
It's free.
Take a look, also, on ThreatFire (it's not the same of an antispyware, but it gives you event checking and blocking suspect actions).

SAS for sure, since Grisoft took over Ewido (A.K.A. AVG anti-spyware) the program just doesn't seem to be progressing.

There are also a number of people in the forums who help on other forums (and this one) to clean out malware and SAS currently does a better job.

There is no spyware in SpywareTerminator. I've been using it for a couple of years with no problems. There have been many discussions in the past about ST being "rogue", that has been proven to be not the case.
There is a toolbar that installs if you opt in for the "WSG" part of SpywareTerminator. I personally wouldn't install that - don't like toolbars - but it's down to user preference.
