Look at this:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,136206/article.html  :-*

AVG Anti-Spyware is rated "very good", Spybot Search & Destroy is rated "poor"!

Look at the dates the article is 5 months old and possibly older, So there is probably a later version of S&D (which may on may not be any better), AVG-AS just doesn't seem to be catching them any more, especially when compared to SAS and those using it (in these forums and other anti-malware forums) as a start point to clear infection.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.2.6105 (build 24.2.8918.824) UI 1.0.799/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

There is a new version of Spybot - Search & Destroy. Version 1.5.2 was released at the end of January.

Quote
Spybot-S&D 1.5 has quite a lot of advantages over version 1.4: improved compatibility, more effective detections and new functions. Between all the positive feedback we received, there were also some things that needed to be improved: the immunization sometimes needed to be applied twice before sticking, many users wanted the file shredder back, and it was impossible to remove entries from the user blacklist in the Internet Explorer plugin. But first of all, we apologize for the long starting time of Spybot-S&D 1.5.1 to all users. This item has been fixed now in this new version 1.5.2.

AVG-AS just doesn't seem to be catching them any more, especially when

... it will be stopped :-\ Yesterday i read at grisoft.com:

Is there a standalone AVG Anti-Virus Edition or AVG Anti-Spyware Edition available with AVG 8.0?

No, there is no standalone product available with anti-virus or anti-spyware functionality only. AVG 7.5 Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware users will be offered a free upgrade to AVG 8.0 Anti-Virus, containing anti-virus and anti-spyware functionality protection within one improved scanning engine.

Rest in peace ewido ...

Do you continue with SAS or do you give A² a second chance? ::)

I continue with SAS.
A-squared gave me so much false positives, bad Registry management (can't restore)... It's not installed in my computer anymore.

Although limited in functionality, you can also install and use Comodo's BOClean (http://www.comodo.com).. It's free and is a resident scanner. I have it installed on my computer, and it works fine in the background. It's just another layer of protection.

I also heard very high regards for Threatfire by PC Tools (http://www.pctools.com) as some have mentioned above. I would use that, but there is a bug in the program itself that doesn't let Windows Backup in Vista run while it's running in the background.. It kills the process so the backup fails.. Other than that, ThreatFire is another great behaviour blocker.

I would avoid Spybot. It was good in its day, but is no longer effective, in my opinion. I think of A-Squared as another Ad-Aware 2007, and heard mixed reviews on Spyware Terminator. I'd get the free version of Spyware Doctor from google pack before any of the above..

I've found a test including antiviruses, antitrojans and antispyware programs together dated on 30. September 2006. There were 3390 nasties including spywares, viruses and trojans:

1486 -> a-squared
1314 -> Ashampoo AntiSpyWare
1206 -> CounterSpy
0927 -> Spy Sweeper
0846 -> Trojan Remover
0833 -> Spyware Doctor
0685 -> SUPERAntiSpyware
0683 -> eTrust PestPatrol Anti-Spyware
0445 -> Ad-Aware
0235 -> Spybot

Interesting results, but I'm sure each program has evolved in their own special way since 2006. Can you find any more recent tests?

Tech,
I've read about your problems with a squared, but that was last year.   Are or were you still having issues with it now?

No. I don't have it installed anymore. Too much false positives, registry restore function failed to restore... I had to use a full partition backup restoration to live again... No thanks.

On a once bitten twice shy approach I doubt Tech has tried the latest version.

Sorry, lost my confidence.
Yes, I've tried the last one.
I'll keep only SuperAntispyware and SpywareTerminator on-demand both, from now on.
