From last info known from Vlk, sometime in 2008 (if everything goes ok).

Well we know there will be a huge upgrade to engine itself (packers which are constantly being updated anyway, possible generic unpacking engine). There is also a chance to see some form of heuristic scanning but ALWIL team is going to put some more effort in behavioral detection instead. We can as well expect GUI changes but nothing known so far.

will the major changes of Avast version 5 render the current skins for the interface unusable.

I usually find other AV's fancy GUI pretty unusefull, I would like to have the same GUI or at least something very close to actual GUI which is both very functional and intuitive.

When I say other AV's you know: norman, panda, bitdefender (awfull!!!), mcafee, symantec, kasp, they all stink, they go the artificial fancy way.

Oh whatever they do PLEASE make sure the Terminal-0010 skin works with all future versions! That is the only interface I can use and it makes avast awesome!  8)

I see no reason for losing support of it...

I however do. Skins may be fun but honestly, ppl prefer streamlined, all in one interface over bunch of windows and menus here and there all seperated to dozen of panels. It's simply not useful and only confuses users regardless of how cool skins are.
Avira AntiVir interface is an example of good design. Kaspersky Antivirus 6 and 7 also fall into this category. If avast! will ever look something like this i'll ditch skins without any problem (i don't use them anyway)...

Don't get me wrong, I like avast, but I find the skins gimmicky and would prefer a straightforward GUI, just my opinion.  :)

Happy New Year, all  ;D

I'm afraid I'll have to disappoint you, but the GUI will certainly be redesigned and the skins from avast! 4 won't work there.
The underlying technology, ActiveSkin, is quite obsolete (= it's not developed anymore, and without the sources there's no way to fix the problems - and there are quite a few).
I don't know if there will be any (alternative) skinning options in avast! 5 or not - but ActiveSkin will be the first thing to get rid of, sorry.

Don't be. Making the skin was fun (i can say for my own, i'm sure Sasha had lots of fun doing all the skins too) but major GUI redesign is a need if we want avast! to be even more popular. Even if that means no skinning capability...
