If you had checked Jamie2020's other topic you would see he had tried that:
Hello, as the title says, today I noticed that my Avast Premium security would not allow me to update virus definitions. I get a warning saying that my virus definitions are not up to date, I click on the update button, but instead of updating as usual, it just keeps giving me the warning "Virus Definitions are not up to date" in red text.

Here's what I have tried:
1) I have made sure that the Avast Premium Security software itself is up to date (Status is green, saying the software is up to date)
2) I did a repair on the software itself, and there didn't seem to be any indication that the software itself was problematic. Or at least, I got no notifications that something was wrong.

What I haven't done is uninstall and reinstall Avast, because honestly, the last time I did that, I had to redo all of my settings, especially those relating to my Firewalls rules and exceptions, and that's even after I made a backup that supposedly should've restored my settings. I don't trust the software's ability to restore the fine details I set up for my rules, because it didn't the last time.

So short of actually uninstalling and reinstalling the software, what are my options? Is this something anyone else experienced?

OK, well then he could try to uninstall the program with Avast Clear, delete any left over folders and registry entries, and do a clean install.

That has also been mentioned in his topic and that is also in the quoted text in my reply.

I have figured out what was wrong. I'm writing this here in case anyone else might have a similar problem then mine.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Avast, and the update issue still persist. Luckily, if I try to uninstall or update using "apps menu" in the  Windows system settings, it gives me an error log. From the error log I concluded that the reason my Avast wasn't updating is because of connection issues, specifically timeout issues from IPv4 and IPv6. I'm no network expert, but I know that these can be related to DNS settings in windows network settings.

About a week ago, the DNS provided by my ISP was giving me connection problems, so I changed the DNS to Google DNS. (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) and resolved my connection problems. For some reason though, the Avast software wouldn't allow me to update with the Google DNS. I switched it back to my default ISP DNS, and the software updated itself, along with the Virus Definitions.

So that resolved it.

I do have a question though, and this is more aimed at people from AVAST (whom I hope is looking at the forums) :

Is there any particular reason why using Google DNS would prevent me from updating my AVAST software? I also tried some other reliable public DNS, like Open DNS, and Cloudflare, and it seems that AVAST won't let me update if I use those either. I'm genuinely curious because other softwares I installed had no problem updating using the Google DNS, or the other I mentioned.

When will the support for Windows 11's new right-click menu be available? When right-clicking on a file now, more options are needed to find the option to use Avast to scan.

That has nothing to do with Avast but is a feature in Windows 11. You need to either select show more options
or, you can depress the shift key while using the right mouse key to select the file you want Avast to scan, and you'll see that option when you select the file in that manner. (I programmed that shift and right mouse key selection into my keyboard which has some programmable keys.)

Hello, thanks for the response.
I looked at the list of files and data collected by the app, and it seems like a pretty exhaustive list of things, some of which I'm not comfortable sharing. As a general rule, I try to limit the kind of information that installed software can obtain from my devices and that gets sent to developers. Is there a way for me to review the information that is actually collected (in the form of a file I can read) before it gets sent?

I use Avast free 23.5 and have experienced no negative issues.  I always retain an offline installer for the previous installed version.

Are emergency updates still issued for minor bugs?

Yes, that was how the last issue was fixed, I think it is the uupdate function that checks every 4 hours or when a restart occurs (effectively resets this 4 hour schedule).  That said I think this was previously called emupdate and was a scheduled task.

The question was answered in your other post. Please only post a question in one place to avoid confusion.

Hi Jamie2020, you can choose on the second support tool screen the button "Options..." here you can select what kind of information will the tool collect. You can also choose to not send the package automatically, so you can review the file on the disk and if needed also remove another information from the package.

I hope this will help you to not share anything you dont want to.

Thanks.

Jan
