Creating a not-normally-available sound

By adding a new entry to the registry, I've been able to create a new entry in the windows sound scheme that's currently loaded. In this case, an alert sound for if a virus database update should fail. But will it work?

I should preface the following by mentioning that I don't have much knowledge about this.(I do have ERUNT make daily backups.)

What I did was add a value under HKEY/Current User/App Events/Schemes...(Where are stored the sound schemes) and created a new key for Avast, automatic database update failure, and added a string to it with the sound to associate.
Then opened up audio properties, and there it was (where it wasn't before) and the sound played when tested. Auto updating of Avast fails very rarely, so I know of no way to test it for real.
So, the question. How do I associate this particular sound to the event? I'm not so naive as to expect it will associate itself. (But if it does, goody.)
Obviously the way sounds (in this case Avast's) are set up so that a particular event will trigger a sound, and the available options are viewable in the audio properties, and the terminologies for each are probably specific, and relate to a particular program process.

So gurus, how do I do it? (Or have I done it?)

You can do it with Windows and without having to mess directly with Registry.
You can open the Events Sounds applet and change whatever you want and then saving the scheme with another name, applying it...

Thanks, Tech, I knew that.
I'm talking about for a sound that isn't (wasn't)  in the event sounds applet.
Creating the reg entry creates the applet entry.
But will the sound associate with the event?
