Startpage flat sucks.  The inability to set my own default search engine anymore sucks much worse.

Already a similar topic to yours, see my reply there, whilst its related to a different search engine it would be the same for others:

First let me say that I don't use ASB and what I post below has been as a result of a few searches:

***  Check out this link - https://support.avast.com/en-gb/article/17#idt_006
In that there are a couple of things that might help.
1.  Importing your default browser settings  -  See the Set your default browser section.
Then see - Set your default browser - This mentions.
Avast Secure Browser allows you to import bookmarks, browsing history, search engines, saved passwords, and auto-fill form data from several popular web browsers, or from an HTML file.  The highlighting BOLD is mine

For more information about importing browser data to Avast Secure Browser, refer to the following article:
https://support.avast.com/en-gb/article/83/#pc

So it would appear by importing your previous browser data if DudkDuckGo was one of the search engines in the imported data that search engine would be in the dropdown list.

I have been using Avast browser for several years, now, so there is no data from another browser to import.  I have been an AVAST customer for longer than I have used the browser.

Some additional information, even when you do find a spot that might let you change the search engine (it is REALLY buried), and you remove Startpage and enter your preference, Startpage DOES NOT LET GO.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I will not be tyrannized by a piece of software.  And that's what this is....tyranny.  You can either FIX THIS, or I WILL SAY GOODBYE TO AVAST, and take my money elsewhere.

Hi W5GA,

there is an alternative if you prefer DDG while using our browser, you can try downloading & installing the DuckDuckGo extension from Chrome Web Store and you can get DDG as default search provider.

If the instructions in the links suggested in my reply - https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=326163.msg1714929#msg1714929 don't work.
e.g.  Importing data from your current/previous browser would allow for the importation of Search settings -

Then these pages need to be modified/updated or the ASB program should be modified to enable the import these browser and search engine settings.
