Looking for substitute for AdAware2007 Plus
« on: January 13, 2008, 11:01:03 AM »
Good Morning!

Sorry, I know this topic has been much written.

My problem is, I have just uninstalled one more valid (240 days) version of Lavasofts
bloated Adaware 2007 Plus.

The reasons why are discussionable, i for my part don`t recommend it anymore.

Now I am looking for another scanner, which

A) is compatible with Avast! and Vista
B) has a German GUI
C) has a resident in the background (no service if possible)
D) also may cost something (not too expansive  ;D)

Probably take everything on the AVG anti spyware?
Are there other possibilities?
If the variant ZoneAlarm firewall + Antispyware would be already Vista
fit, I would certainly buy it (look at my signature).
Perhaps there are other suggestions?
Or should i probably waite for until  Avast!5 and the Avast! Firewall comes out?
Both together would be cover my needs, I hope.

Thanks in advance
Tevion

I'm not sure about the German interface, you can check, but I suggest:
SUPERantispyware (with resident at paid version).
Spyware Terminator (free, with resident).
AVG Antispyware
a-squared (with resident at paid version).

Or SpywareDoctor or Webroot Spy Sweeper.

avast 5 is for lather this year.

Tech, thanks for answering.
I will give Super Antispyware a chance despite of there is an English version only.
But there are good recommendations about it and there is a 15-day trial period of the Pro version.
I think almost all other antispyware products are better in handling, detection rate and using computer resources than Lavasoft`s AdAware2007!

If you really wanted the resident protection from Superantispyware,to purchase its $29.95,thats quite a lot. However, when you download the updates, manually on the free version. It ALWAYS says buy the Pro version for $19.95 ( one day only  ;D ) which isn't so much.

Hallo Polonus (you speak German?)
good idea, i know Spybot S&D.
It`s freeware and seems to be very effectively.
And it has resident protection called teatimer.
I have installed version 1.4  on my XP-machine.
Works great without problems.
New version 1.5 is also available for Vista, but i have to wait
for the final release, this one messed up my notebook.
And it needs too much resources at this moment.
But they develope a stable version soon at least i hope so.

And micky77 thats a good idea, thanks.
If i really buy Super Antispyware i will go your way  ;D
But at the moment i test the Pro version only - 15 days time.
No decision at this moment, its too much money.

I gave up on recommending it. Indeed, it was uninstalled of my XP/Vista systems...

Adaware and spybot are a bit long in the tooth now and to be honest AVG is not much better...  Currently I recommend Superantispyware, good detection rates plus it has inbuilt fixes for things that malware tends to break

Yeah you are right, although Lavasoft have had initiated with AdAware2007 a brand new version in Jun 2007.
But that isn`t worth discussion about.
At this moment Superantispyware runs on my notebook at least until end of trial period -:)

C) has a resident in the background (no service if possible)

I think you'll find that more and more security apps, even without resident protection, are switching over to running as services either instead of or in addition to as apps.  Supposedly this is so they'll be active for all users under Vista.

I use the free version of a-squared, which does that too.  And since there's no resident protection (plus I'm the only user), I kill the process after checking for updates or doing a scan, and other than a warning entry in Events ("terminated unexpectedly") that's worked fine.
Intel Atom D2700, 2 gig RAM, Win 7 x64 SP1 & IE-11, Firefox 51.0
(default). 320 gig HD, 15Mb DSL, Win firewall, Avast 12.3.2280 free, SpywareBlaster, MBAM Prem., Crypto-Prevent

Yes, my opinion, but under Vista there are other possibilities to configure autostart programs for one or even all users.
You can use tasks and triggers. Easy programming and everytime to change or even to delete if you want so.
Services may be stopped or disabled by you but how can you delete it? I don`t know.
It makes sense for me that very important security programmes like virusscanner or firewall use services, but please,
not all of them.

I suppose you've set the service to manual start (not automatic).

Yes, but starting the application also starts the service.  I don't remember a start-with-Windows option for a-squared, but since I use no resident services I (supposedly) wouldn't have any use for that.
