It's trying to be forced on me.

When you make statements like this, you have to be more detailed e.g. 'how it is trying to do this' ?
Without detailed information it is 'impossible' for anyone to try and help.

@DavidR,

 Why else would Avast want me to restart my computer?

@DavidR,

 Why else would Avast want me to restart my computer?

Here we go again, zero information, a screenshot would be most helpful.

I didn't get any warning or notifications to restart (as I have said program set to manual update), only when I manually checked did it update and then I restarted.

You should have checked what program update you already had when this occurred, trying to find out after the fact makes it impossible to help.  Nor do you say what the program version is that requires a restart.

I suspect the opening of the avast UI may (and that's a big MAY) have triggered the check, but there really is no information to work with.

@DavidR,

I don't have a program to take a screenshot.

I'm done with this.

Yes you do, it is included in windows

The perfect computer for you would be a Chromebook, always updated and no need for antivirus

@DavidR.

I installed the new version on a different computer but when I restarted all I had was a black screen.  I pushed the power button  but it wouldn't open.  It ruined that computer so I had to buy a new one. I  shouldn't have installed it on this one.

Use your recovery disk to boot that system.

Hmm... Seems to me if Avast was eating systems these boards would be lit up with tens of millions of complaints. ::)

Agreed.

I'd take Pondus's advice and spend monies on a nice Chromebook laptop.  You don't need an antivirus for Chromebook, it self-updates, and Google maintains your security for you free of charge.

Here you go:
This does not mean you've to go and buy right away but take your time and make your best choice.  I think you might be surprised and happy at the same time.
Windows 11 Home 23H2
Windows 11 Pro 23H2
Avast Premier Security version 24.8.6127 (build 24.8.9372.868)

I have an HP laptop PC on which Avast Free is installed with Windows 10 and recently it no longer always starts. When you turn on the PC or restart it (when after quite a few attempts to turn it on it turns on) the black screen remains and only the LEDs on the keyboard remain lit.

I can't understand what it could be, also because the few times I manage to start it it works correctly without any errors.

Now reading this post I wonder if Avast Free might be the cause...

I use Avast Free on two Asus and I'm not experiencing any problems at the moment.
Thank you and good day!

again  ;D

Get someone to install ChromeOS flex and then you have a chromebook and no need for antivirus, you can do this on any old computer you have
I know it is useless to tell you this because you never listen and will not try anything we suggest

you find a ton of info here https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=324963.0

This post was made with a Chromebook   ;)

Just installed the latest free Avast anti-virus. It wiped out all my recent bookmarks and shows ones that I haven't used in over a year. I had deleted most of those old bookmarks and yet, here they are. I'm a 70 yr old non tech type so be gentle.

I turned off and restarted my laptop and nothing changed. That is the extent of my computer knowledge.
