Non-stop Renewal Notifications
« on: May 30, 2024, 11:37:17 PM »
I've used Avast for years, with the free version. Tried out the Premium version, which was fine.

BUT WHAT IS WITH THE CONSTANT RENEWAL NOTIFICATIONS?!

It's completely absurd. I have all notifications turned off. I have it in silent mode. BUT EVERY HOUR, on the dot:

this bloody pop-up jumps in front of everything on my screen. Halfway through a movie? Hey, your subscription is ending soon! Focused on work? Did you know you subscription is ending soon?

The level of harassment is unreal! I can see getting a notification in the system tray once or twice a day when you're close to ending, but a giant pop up EVERY HOUR???

It's totally soured my feelings about the program, which I've used without issue for a long time. Why would you set the rate to an HOURLY notification and a giant pop-up? And there's no way to stop it, that I can see, as I said. All notifications are off, it's in silent mode, but no, I've got Avast getting in my face every 60 minutes.

You guys should change this, it's completely obnoxious. And yes, I know I could renew, but I can't afford to spend the money on it right now, so I'm letting the subscription expire for now, until I can. But this is making me not want to bother.

Sorry for the rant, but this is just too much.

Why wait so long to renew, it doesn't reduce the subscription period.

That said though, I'm not sure if you have a Premium version that you have paid a subscription or you are using the trial version  ?

If you can't afford it right now, uninstall and install Avast Free, I have been using Avast Free for 20 years and it suits me just fine.  It rather depends on if there is a component/feature that you need.  If you can't afford it right now drop down to the Free version.  But you would have to first uninstall the Premium trial/paid, restart and install Avast Free.

Download the Avast Free offline installation file - https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe

It's the trial version, I wanted to try it out, but I realized I didn't really need it over the free version, so I was just going to let it revert on its own. Then the harassing started.

And while uninstalling and reinstalling is always an option, that isn't really the point. I want to let them know, assuming any devs come on these boards, that they've gone way overboard. Every hour is just ridiculous for something that takes over your screen like this.

I don't believe it will revert on its own, the closer you get to the date, my guess is they would get more frequent.

Hopefully you didn't setup a direct debit mandate (which can be the case of using the trial version for 30 days) or you would also have to cancel this mandate/trial subscription.
The point is as you said 'you don't want the hassle.'

Personally I wouldn't wait, if you can't afford it why put up with this hassle, bite the bullet, download the free offline installation file uninstall the trial, reboot and install Avast Free.

Just now, I noticed an update for Premium in settings. It might fix the issue. See attached capture in Avast Settings. It was set to upgrade automatically but didn't. I needed to click Check for updates and then it did so.

I don't think Avasts intends to "harass" you with notifications for the reason you gave. Sounds like a bug to me. Although I haven't experienced it, sometimes bugs only happen in specific environments/situations.

Given your screenshot, I believe that they are different issues.

If not then you would also have been getting the screenshot posted by "kabukibear" as he is in a restricted trial version of Avast Premium.

Yeah, I went ahead and cancelled the subscription online before the trial period was up, so I figured "ok, I'll use the trial until it expires and it'll go back to the free version." Then all this crap started and wouldn't stop. Looks like my only recourse is to uninstall the program, restart my computer and reinstall the free version, which is a hassle in itself. They shouldn't be doing this, it'll put people off, and they need to know it. I don't know whose idea it was to set the rate to hourly, but it was a dumb one.

I updated the program last night. Only thing that's changed is now, instead of getting the pop up every 17 minutes after the hour, I now get it every 9 minutes after. I'm going to have to uninstall it, I'm not going through another 4 days of this, it literally popped up IN THE MIDDLE OF COMMENTING ABOUT IT. lol

Because of the additional components in the Premium product (my thoughts here) it isn't going to be a simple revert to the Free version. It is going to require an uninstall which clears everything.  In order for the various system integration to be cleared, that is I believe why it requires a restart to clear these system settings prior to your installing Avast Free.

First your post is unrelated to this topic Considered hijacking.

1: The Avast Clear executable file is only required if you are unable to uninstall it via Windows, Programs, Add Remove Program.

If 1: above doesn't answer your question or you have a problem uninstalling via the Windows, Programs, Add Remove Program.  These start your own new topic so as not to take this one off-topic.
