These are great results from avast! I've tried a lot of security software, but I always find myself coming back to avast...

has anyone tried the new version ov avast? some are reporting problems . There is a very good news about it now we have an antivirus/spyware engine. is this a better engine than ST?

I have no doubts about it. Spyware Terminator could have, from time to time, in some cases a better detections due to signatures. But the engine (scanning machine), I'll trust on avast.

Do you know AVZ (http://z-oleg.com/index.php)?
Zaytcev Oleg  has tested ST on 2500 samples of viruses ITW - result 0, nothing has been detected.
The best antispy is antivirus...

Can't read Russian... but it's a very poor result if an user is using ST as the resident protection. I just have it as on-demand.

@ gery

Well something which doesn't cut the mustard (AVG-AS I feel has suffered a lack of development since it was bought from ewido) even if it is simple and quick really isn't worth having. AVG-AS has for some time now not been close to SAS and the fact that it will soon no longer be available as a standalone product isn't good. When that happens who knows if it will be supported with signature updates, etc.

There is a new version of SAS 4.0 just released to the public after beta testing and that is quicker on scans.

that is another truble for me . thank you for the warning. i have seen the thiong about AVG AS and it is smth really bad. i upgraded to avast 4.8 and i really dont see any trouble.can you specify why i should avoid CAAPS or something?thank you for your reply.I think it is a very good news that avast is an AS aplication too. good deal for us all . Do you know that i am considerin to envite all of my friends to switch to avast?i think it is a very wise thing. The little problem with avast is that when i scan the arcives it takes i don't know how long to finish scaninig. hope this will be fixed soon. the progress bar is perfect . at list we know what is going on now. greatings to every avast user on this forum and allllll

Using CAPS to emphasise a word is fine when you use ALL caps in computing it is considered shouting in many forums and news groups. Not only that large blocks of caps are hard to read.

It is good to invite your friends to use avast, but on the on-demand scans you don't have to scan archives, nor do you have to do a Thorough scan (perhaps the first scan you do Thorough+archives to check your system is clean). After that I would suggest a Standard scan without archives.

Archive (zip, rar, etc.) files are by their nature are inert, you need to extract the files and then you have to run them to be a threat. Long before that happens avast's Standard Shield should have scanned them and before an executable is run that is scanned. Thorough is also by its design very thorough and perhaps a little overkill for routine use, were a Standard scan without archives should be adequate.

I have only ever done a through scan with archives once shortly after installation just to ensure a clean start state, but with XP for example avast will do a boot-time scan after installation if you select it, this I believe will be quicker and reasonably effective. Like everything in life things are a compromise.
