Frequency of "virus updates"?
« on: December 11, 2007, 04:10:13 PM »
Hi again,

Just wondering .. on the average .. say Monday to Friday ..(and then on the Weekends as well) - how often can one expect new "virus updates" to come out?

Like couple of times a week, once a day, several times a day, .. "all depends", etc?

The reason i am asking (not that it's that important anyhow) - when i was with AntiVir .. - i noticed usually they had "new updates" like few times a day (Monday to Friday anyhow) .. and on the Weekend (Saturday, Sunday and Holidays) - less frequent - sometimes no update at all until Monday.. or sometimes say, occasional update on Saturday or Sunday, etc..
And that's all approximate of course..

So basically just wondering .. ( out of curiosity, lol  :D )

Thanks again..

The VPS History link is an eye opener!  I had no idea how hard Avast was working and I appreciate it all the more.
With a modem that works at a glacial speed, updates sometimes slow things down for a while.  Now I'll stop groaning when the little green box pops up.

That is the beauty of the incremental updates, they are much smaller and even on-dial-up (which I also have) VPS updates aren't really a problem, counted in seconds rather than minutes normally (for me anyway).

I'm wondering a little bit. A test in a german computer magacine said:

Update Frequency for avast: 7 - 8 hours, but the link above shows only one update a day?!  :-\

As average, seems too frequent... once a day or, at most, once and a half as average.

Quite often, if there's several updates in rapid succession, the latest ones are to correct false-positives in earlier ones.  The Alwil team do wonders in responding rapidly to confirmed FPs.

Since I was so impressed last month about how active avast! is in updating the base, I checked again this morning on the "VPS History" link.
In the past few days there are literally too many to count, but at least 400 recognized threats!! :o
So I am even more impressed and thankful.
