The windows file error 1006 = The volume for a file has been externally altered so that the opened file is no longer valid.

Though there is an avast Knowledge base entry for this, does it ring any bells on your system ?

How and where did you download the avast program from ?

Did you use a download manager program ?

Did you try to download and install in one step, rather than download and save to your hard disk and then run the saved file ?

When you installed it were you using an account with administrator priviliges (not a limited account) ?
Did you install avast to the default location (C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4) or did you choose a different location ?

It is a bit baffling why it won't install correctly.

Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

1006 error of avast sfx installer is usually the sign of incomplete download.

I'm getting the same problem.

Text in the pop-up box is:
Quote
An error 1006 (000003EE) has occurred.
Last performed operation was:
opening the self-extract archive

Try to download setup file again.
If you use Internet Explorer, clear it's chache before downloading:
Start->Control Panel->Internet Options and delete Temporary Internet Files.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium on an Intel Q6600 system with 2GB ram, 320GB HDD.

Have already downloaded the file twice (download to install later), same result each time. (Followed the above procedure before the second download.) Used both IE and Firefox downloads, not using a download manager. Only using Windows Firewall on my PC.

File is named setupeng.exe, size 16 059 876 bytes

Downloaded it from this link http://www.download.com/Avast-Home-Edition/3000-2239-10019223.html?part=dl-AvastHome&subj=dl&tag=button on page http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html.

Going to try the http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe direct link next, through Firefox with no download manager.

The file on our servers is 18 884 808 Jan  7 19:06 setupeng.exe
Download.com reports 18.01 MBs, which maps to the very similar length. Than confirms what I said earlier - you have incomplete download.

Yep, would agree having looked closer at file size. Might be a problem with download.com then...? (Edit: Downloads stopped automatically, no user action to cancel early.)

Just downloaded from avast.com, file size 18 884 808 bytes. Executes straight into the setup screen.

Thanks for the pointer to look at file size and try a different download link.
