Avast Home Download problems
« on: February 19, 2008, 12:23:08 AM »
I can appreciate that this has been asked before but i am so close to smashing my computer through the floor that i could really do with some help.

I had Avast home on a previous comp and it ran fantastically but now i have been giving a different tower unit (with better memory etc). I got the unit fully recovered to factory settings and since having it i have updated like made and installed sp2 i installed avast home and it ran well although it suddenly would start automatically like it used to, i tried to repair it as advised but to no avail so i removed it and tried to re download and install from both the Avast site and download.com but now all i get is problems. I am running IE7 and windows XP. I have had problems like "windows has detected errors with the program" "there was an error whilst completing the setup process" and a few others. PLEASE HELP

I use Firefox as a web browser, downloaded from the Avast website and it took me 3 downloads to get it to install.

The one you download from the download.com is an old vision and actually you have a download problem or installing problem? And if you download please download it from avast website and is better. Do you mean that you cant install avast? and pop up error?

I tried several times to download the software from the Avast site and to be honest most of my problems came from this particular download. I have however now managed to get the software from a totally different site and Avast home has now been installed onto my desktop, whether or not it will now behave is another matter it has yet to update automatically and hopefully it will start up everytime i start the computer as this was the problem i had in the first place.

I got the unit fully recovered to factory settings
Isn't there any preinstalled antivirus in these settings? Norton?

Whilst on this topic,  a friend bought a Compaq laptop with Vista Home recently, this came with Norton free trial installed,...groooaan, I have had big probs with this before on a previous Toshi laptop I own.
I un-installed Norton and down loaded and installed Avast Home free version.  On restart it went into what looked like Dos mode and started to do a virus scan.  I left this for a while and came back and the laptop had turned itself off and could not be restarted.  After a sometime of doodling around it started and wanted to do a Windows check as something was not installed correctly, or a conflict.  I opted to use a system restore point to get back to where it was prior to Avast install.
So where to from here??  Is there a conflict with NAV(even though un installed, as has been my experience previously) or is it something else???

Any help much appreciated. :)

Cheers

Welcome to the forums, BSA.    :)

You need to do more than just remove Norton by using Add/Remove. Here is the link for the removal tool ...

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

First, uninstall everything related to Norton or Symantec with add/remove and reboot before running the tool.

OK ... let me first say I am the newest of newbies on avast ... I have a toshiba laptop, came with McAfee Internet Suite installed.  A friend recommended installing avast when McAfee expired.  I downloaded it ... as follows ... first professional ... then uninstalled that ... then home edition ... I removed McAfee in Uninstall programs.  I have the following issues now ... IE7 will not let me click on certain dialog butons, my web mail (YAHOO, HOTMAIL, ETC) shows no text in the mail body, and yahoo messenger does not echo what I type in the chat screen NOR can I see what anyone types to me.  Could McAfee still be out there and gumming things up?  Any help would be appreciated ... I have read serveral posts .. and the forum folks are AWESOME!!

This article provides the steps to remove SecurityCenter from your computer.
http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/faq3.asp?docid=71525

If you need, you can find many free versions of these registry cleaners here:
http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/system/fwregtools.html

Sometimes, McAfee won't be completely removed if, before, you do not uninstall Avast, including the use of its "Uninstall Application" if necessary (www.avast.com/eng/faq-install-uninstall-avast.html).

At least, repair your installation:
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
