How to stop regular access to internet
« on: February 11, 2008, 09:27:27 PM »
Avast has a tendency to want to connect to the internet regularly.

I have a dial up connection so I only go on when I need to.

A: I suggest you get broadband

Is there a way to turn this off?

 :)  Hi :

I have a Dial-Up Connection and Avast and my computer NEVER tries to
connect to the internet unless I click my Internet Service Provider's
Dialogue "box" . IF something is trying to get you to connect to the
internet, it is NOT Avast, but some "malware" you have on your computer.
To "discover" this "malware", best to run a Scan of an antiSPYWARE/
antiTROJAN program; do you have any of these types of programs on your
computer ? IF NOT, I recommend you install the FREE Version of
     "SUPERAntiSpyware", available from www.superantispyware.com .
After "updating" it, run its "Complete Scan" to see IF anything is
      detected .

I too have dial-up and avast doesn't connect to the internet (it physically hasn't got that capability), it checks for the presence of an internet connection and if one exists will check for updates.

So as Spiritsongs mentions it is something else that is establishing the connection.

Check the avast Program Settings, Update (Connections) and tick the I only connect to the internet using a dial-up modem.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Thanks, I've found that and checked that. I'll see if it helps.

Thanks for the help. In addition to Avast I use Spybot. Is this sufficient or do I need a third program: "SUPERAntiSpyware"?

While some here so not like Spybot as well, I have been using it a long time and like it. I use Spyware Terminator as a backup. SuperAntiSpyware is also one of the better ones.

Still happening. Every half an hour or so when I'm not online the dialogue box turns up asking to connect to the internet as if I'd just launched IE or Windows Mail.

Could spybot be to blame. I can't think what else it could be.

is there any freeware that would tell me which application is launching the dialogue box?

ps I've run avast and spybot... nothing dodgy here!

Spybot does not ask for a connection. The connection has the be made first by the user and then Spybot has to be told to update by the user.
