Program hang-up / reboot of machine - Avast Home
« on: February 25, 2008, 02:08:07 AM »
My machine rebooted itself about an hour ago.  Error Report (Microsoft) seemed to think it may have been caused by antivirus - possibly more than one running (which isn't the case).  However, I am running Spybot Resident and TeaTimer; Comodo (was BoClean); SpywareBlaster; and ZoneAlarm (free edition).  Has this happened to anybody else out there or am I the only cheapskate running freebie (but effective) protection?  ???
Thanks,
Pete

No, you are not the only cheapskate!    :)

Please download HijackThis from the link below, run the program but do not make any fixes, and then post the log results in this thread using the "copy & paste" method. It will probably take more than one post to be able to get the complete log posted. Someone will review your log and then offer help.

You can go to Start Menu > Administrative Tools > Events and check into the 'error' messages of the folders there where is the 'report' of the reboot? The number of the error (BSOD) could help us to help you.

I'm also having the same problem exactly as described by limey57.  Have uninstalled and reinstalled Avast.  Don't know why it started to be a daily problem.... didn't used to be.  I like Avast and want to continue using it.  Perhaps you folks can help me pinpoint the real culprit.    I have pasted the "HighjackThis" log from my computer below.  At the time of the log Avast was disabled.  Any help is appreciated.

I realize you have Norton Ghost but did you also at some time have Norton anti-virus?

CharleyO,

Yes, many, many months ago - I ran Norton Internet Security 2004 for firewall and anti-virus protection.  Last year, they increased their subscription fees and I got fed up with them folks, did a "sucessfull" uninstall in the control panel (remove programs section).  Kept the Ghost program for backups.  Then installed Avast and Comodo as a replacement.

Some additional info that may help.......

From the event log the following event describes the bootup after an unexpected "black out"

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck.  The bugcheck was: 0x1000000a (0x00000016, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x804e469a). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini030208-02.dmp.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

The numbers in the bugcheck are consistent in every occurance (at least once a day) I normally leave this computer on unless thunderstorms are close.

It will be good to run SymNRT, an uninstall tool of Symantec to remove trash left behind by the antivirus and firewall.
You can keep Norton Ghost without problem (or even uninstall it, remove all other Symantec products, install again).

Tech,

Didn't know that SymNRT even existed.  Downloaded it and ran it.  Created a restore point afterward.  It also uninstalled Ghost 10 in the process.  Will run this computer for a couple days without Ghost (just to be safe) and with Avast enabled.  If the problem disappears during that timeframe, then I think it's fixed and will reload Ghost for backups.  Time will tell right now.   Will keep you guys advised of the results and thank you very much for your help!  So much for believing in "succesfully uninstalled"

Norton Ghost shouldn't conflict in anyway with avast. You can install it immediatly and make all backups that you need/want.

Tech,

OK, reinstalled Ghost 10.0,  had to re-boot, did it and got this mesage again after re-boot:

Serious Error

BCCode : 1000000a     BCP1 : 00000016     BCP2 : 00000002     BCP3 : 00000000
BCP4 : 804E469A     OSVer : 5_1_2600     SP : 2_0     Product : 768_1

Went to the error report.  Same susposidly antivisus confict shows again. interesting huh?

Back to square one I think.

At this juncture, I will leave things as they are and watch to see if this system tanks again.

Hmmm... this is an error from Ghost I suppose.
I never heard about an incompatibility but both, avast and Ghost, use low level drivers and maybe... who knows...

Tech,

Don't know what a low level driver is and probably wouldn't understand anyway.  After using the Norton removal tool earlier, clean re-boot.  After re-installing Ghost, error message on re-boot.  Going to run the removal tool again and see what happens without Ghost.

Tech,

Out of curiosity, restarted this computer before using the removal tool again.  Same "serious error" message again.  So I ran the removal tool.   Re-boot was clean.... so I restarted it again...... re-boot was clean.  I dunno, but with what's going on so far, it appears to me that Symantec is within itself a virus to this machine.  So, for now, will continue to run without any Symantic lables installed for a couple of days and see what happens.  BTW, got any suggestions for a good replacement backup program?
