Personally i love Comodo Firewall Pro 3.0.19.318 (free) , has many features, novices may feel a little overwhelmed at first, but its quite simple once you get used to it.

WinPatrol is not bad, but against targetted attacks that target weaknesses against firewall, no doubt Winpatrol would not stand up.
WinPatrol is not and has never claimed to be a firewall.  ??? ??? ;D

Please point out where I said it was a firewall ????

I was merely responding to your statement that "If something got through a "fw leak", WinPatrol would probably warn of it"

I'm saying that anyone using targetted attacks will be using very sophisticated attacks ... Winpatrol has zero chance to "warn" ... Winpatrol is more suitable against run of the mill drivebys...

Comodo firewall 3 is by no stretch "quite simple".... Unless you install without defense+ in which case it is still quite complicated but possibly manageable depending on your skill level and your stomach for answering lots of prompts...

So far, I dropped Comodo 3 Firewall Pro a few months ago for PC Tolols + Firewall:no pop-ups at all bothering and an equivalent protection I guess. I'm pretty satisfied with it. I also downloaded PC Tool Threatfire and it's working fine on my Vista Intel PC 1G RAM and 320 GB HD size. ;D

I apologise, to correct my last statement, for me i found it simple enough to use (even with defense+), i agree if you go into the more advanced handling issues it can get a little advanced, but so far only one issue (don't let little bro's touch PCs imo) which was when my little bro managed to block access permissions to the shell32.dll system file (was put as a isolated app..) but was easily fixable in the security policy section.

However i do sometimes miss Sygate firewall, damn i loved that firewall xD

Notice that you said comodo firewall 3 is "quite easy" for "novices", and yet your "little" brother managed to get the system locked up. I would bet most *novices*, would be closer in skill level to him, then to you...

That is why I will never recommend comodo 3 with defense+ for *novices*.... But then again, i suspect you have a weird definition of novice...

My definition of novice is quite simple (A beginner or someone who does not have experience), however inability to read simple intyructions is not covered by that (Ignorance is no excuse for Stupidity), if my brother had not decided to mess around with settings he that he didn't need to. (he has been told to press alow or trusted app)

However i do see your point, more options often confuse people enough to press the wong things, so i suppose you are right, but i still feel all people have the ability to learn these more complicated products with little to no effort.

Anyway seems we/i have taken this topic offtopic, for this i am sorry to all.

Don't have experience of what exactly? of using firewalls in general? of using computers in general? of using security software in general? of using comodo firewall? etc

Forgive me continuing this. You gave your brother who is a novice the instructions to "press allow or trusted app" ?? Is this for all prompts? A user who does this all the time, might as well not use defense+ at all!!

How does your brother who is a novice know when to block, when not to?

How so? This is about the best free firewall. And you boldly made a claim for a freeware firewall that is best for novices, and we are discussing whether this is true...

I been using COMODO firewall for months if not a year now.
It does notify me often but once you "Get it" how the software works it is reliable, safe, quite and I am very happy with it.

Does not create problems at least.

How does one "get it"? I'm still waiting for someone to tell me how to tell a *novice* how to react to a prompt....

Trial and error? When in doubt click allow? (defeats the purpose of security..) When in doubt click deny? (and cause a lockup ?)

Remember we are not talking about one notify, but one that notifies "often"....

Lusher,
It sounds like your hacking this thread to death.
We've already determined that the best firewall is the one the user is comfortable with.
It may not be the most secure but it's better than not using any firewall.
