Re Infected Mail

Today I received an infected email. Avast flashed up a red message saying the mail was infected. The message disappeared, so I deleted the item and then emptied my deleted mail in Outlook Express.

How does Avast deal with infected mail and can I set the programme to delete infected mail automatically?

And did I act correctly by deleting and emptying the box?

Next I did an Avast virus scan of my PC and nothing was found.

Came home about 2 hours later and did a Trend Micro scan and it picked up 2 infected files (Trojan Bridge A)

Why didn't Avast pick up these files? OK, it was 2 hours later......or is Trend just trying to get me to buy their programme....still I am not happy about having a trojan detected!
