Can't restore files from the virus chest
« on: February 28, 2008, 07:39:16 AM »
Hi everybody. I currently have four files in my virus chest and they all have no viruses on them right now so I would like to restore them but I always get an error. It says, "FileID: 0000000001  Program cannot copy the following file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\kernel32.dll (Original filename: kernel32.dll )
--->Description: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process
FileID: 0000000003  Program cannot copy the following file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsock32.dll (Original filename: wsock32.dll )
--->Description: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process"

How do I go about restoring those files?

If I'm being vague or unclear on something please tell me because I'm rushed right now.  :P Anything and all help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

If they're on System files, they're there for backup purposes.
Why are you trying to restore them? Are the original ones infected?

Tech is right, the files are in the System files section of the virus chest. The reason I'm trying to restore them is because the virus chest says there aren't any viruses on these files so I figure they shouldn't be in virus chest. A second reason is because right now I can't seem to open any .exe files I download onto my computer and the problem started right around the last time I put an infected file into the virus chest. So I'm thinking that there may be a connection.

And Tech said, "Are the original ones infected?". I'm not quite sure what he means by that. I assume I have only one copy of the dll files in my virus chest and those dll files are in my virus chest. I did rescan those files in the chest and all files have no viruses on them.

Am I just supposed to not restore any system files that land in my virus chest? and any idea if there really is a connection between the dll files in my virus chest and my inability to open any .exe files I download?

If they are in the system files section of the chest, they belong there. Avast put them there as back ups.

aphiliac -

Just as a precaution, why don't you post a HJT log here for someone to look at?

Please download HijackThis from the link below, run the program but do not make any fixes, and then post the log results in this thread using the "copy & paste" method. It will probably take more than one post to be able to get the complete log posted. Someone will review your log and then offer help.

About the only thing I see there is out of date java and a desktop component. wich google says is a newsreader?? A file also seems to be missing from your goggle desktop manager.

you can update your java here..

Open an Internet Explorer (only) window and go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp > Scroll down to "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4...allows end-users to run Java applications".

Click the download button on the right.

 > If Information Bar pop-ups up, right-click on it and say it's OK to display the blocked content.

You do not have to install the Java Web Start ActiveX Control

Accept the license agreement > Click on Windows (XP,Vista, .etc) Offline Installation, Multi-language and Save the file jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to your desktop; do not Run it.

When the download is complete, Open Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs:

Uninstall anything that says Sun Java, Java JRE, or similar.

Close Add/Remove Programs.

In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\Java <=this folder, if found. Delete any subfolders it may contain.

Do NOT delete C:\Program Files\JavaVM <=this folder, if found!

Reboot your computer.

Double-click on the saved file to install the update.

Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure  and reboot if not prompted to do so.

I'm not sure what the desktop component is and as for the Google Desktop manager, I wanted to uninstall that some time ago but I couldn't get it to uninstall so I might have gone on a "deleting rampage". :) Also, I've updated my Java thing but I still can't open certain .EXE files. (I know this isn't customer support for my PC but if somebody knows how to fix this .EXE thing, I'd appreciate the help. If not, oh well.)

So the answer to the original question would be to just leave the system files in my virus chest alone right?

Yes. I only have three files in the chest, but that may be because I'm using win98se, xp may have an additional file. command.com, kernal32.dll, wsock32.dll

The desktop component is a link to a website.  It's the 024 line in your hjt log. Google it and you may recognize it.  If you don't want it, open hjt, run a system scan only, checkmark the 024 line and click fix.

What are the exe files  you are having trouble with? Are you downloading them and saving them to your computer, then trying to open them? Or are you trying to run them from the download dialogue box?

Recently, I tried downloading Audacity, XAMPP, and Filezilla 3 and I saved all three files onto my computer. When I tried opening them, a dialog box would appear, saying "NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction" and tell me that pressing Close would terminate the application while Ignore would ignore the problem. The icons these installation files would be this blue and white box rather than the appropriate icon and a black dialog box would also appear every time I try running them.

I ran Ad-Aware and avast! both of which didn't reveal anything that would help me with this problem.  ???

And thanks for the hjt help.  :)

You're welcome.

If the error message has this at the top

"MS-DOS or 16-bit Windows-based program "

See if this helps:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Error Message: MS-DOS or 16-bit Windows-based program - #346, on the Right

Just scroll down and click on it. It will take you to a possible fix/answer.
