New avast version - is this a legitimate notice?
« on: March 01, 2008, 11:37:45 PM »
Hi,

For the past few days a little balloon pops up saying a new avast version is available, download now.

Is this legitimate? Is it from avast or a hacker?

How can I tell the difference so I know when to download or not?

Thanks so much.

Avast will notify you with a green box in the lower right of your screen. I'm not sure if windows security center will also notify you with a ballon. Tech?

No. No balloon from WSC, just that the version is not updated (virus database).
Which avast version are you using? 4.7.1048 (if I remember correctly) is the last official one.

A typo, maybe?  4.7.1098 is current, according to the "avast.com" website.   :)

This is for avast VPS updates as there hasn't been a program update for some while (excluding beta version).

I assume you have the Program Settings, Update (Basic), VPS Updates set to 'Ask' otherwise you wouldn't be getting the notification as to 'download now.' I get these because on dial-up I want to control 'any' internet connection, so mine is set to 'Ask.'
