It will be recreated, there is nothing in the data folder that isn't recreated albeit the logs, etc. will be much smaller as they won't have much in them, but they/the information in them isn't essential.

The downloaded installation file contains the VPS up to the time it was available for update. Any updates to the VPS would still be incremental and small. Trust me just reinstall.

You should use add remove programs, and reboot first, I'm taking the precaution of suggesting you also run the uninstall utility after the reboot (because everything wasn't working as expected) to ensure everything is removed. So follow the steps as outlined in my previous post.

Now uninstall, reboot, run the uninstall utility, reboot, install the latest version, reboot.

Thanks

I downloaded the program. It was not 22 mb  it was only 11.5 mb with name setupeng.  If I place the
mouse on it is shows 4.8.1169

Is this the correct one?

Would I have to register again once installed?

The size is 11,266

It's the latest stable (non-beta) version.

Would I have to register again once installed?
No, you can use the key you've received before by email.

I'm working with the file size given by avast.com of 20.7MB (not 22MB), so I don't know where you downloaded your copy from ?
I can't see how it is so much smaller unless the download didn't complete or is corrupt.

See image 1 from the avast download page.
See image 2 from my firefox download process reporting the size of file to be downloaded, basically confirming the avast.com size.
See image 3 from download.com (Cnet), which also confirms the firefox download.

You don't have to re-register just enter the same key you were sent before.

I already unistalled the program and also used the unistall utility.  I downloaded a file using the link you provided on page 2 of this forum and used a green link that says download from download.com

I am now redownloading it using the first link " English' that appears below the greem link.

It is going to take over 3 hrs so I am exitinhg the forum and will let you know  of the results tommorrow

Thanks

As you can see I too used the download.com link in the image to show the correct file size, it is much better to get it from avast.com (image 1 above, scrolling past the Cnet Green link) as I'm sure the avast servers aren't under as much load as download.com. This may be why the download terminated early at 11.266MB.

My downloads usually take 3.5-4 minutes per MB on mu dial-up connection so it would take about 74-84 minutes even at 5min per MB it would take 105 minutes. Good luck.

Thank you very much DavidR and Tech

I was able to download it from the first link " English"  the one DavidR  showed and it is now working OK. Its size was a little over 21MB

Now I can see the log viewer.  It is empty of course,

These forums are a great asset for the program

Thanks again and take care

You're welcome, glad I could help.

Stick around and browse the forums, especially the sticky topics at the top of each of the forums, not to mention the avast help file. They provide a wealth of information to help you get the best from avast.

Man..this is frustrating.  Last night I left it running and this morning it does not show again

I do not know if it is a memory problem because as I was rebooting the PC it appeared momentarily and then closed

Maybe it is a conflict with any of these programs

Spybot S&D
Spystopper
Windows Defender

Pls advise

Spybot S&D and Windows Defender won't be in conflict.
I don't know about Spystopper, although I guess it does not conflict.
If you start the ashLogV.exe, won't it load now?

No it did not load. However I waas able to load it in safe mode

What confuses me is taht for the second time it reapeared momenrarily as I was rebooting

I checked My Computer and I have 496mb RAM.

However if I go to C:\  it says 633,184 as largest executable program

Could it also be a pop up problem?  ie  maybe the PC does not allow popups

If it is a memory problem maybe I could elliminate some unnecesary programs form the start up  using msconfig

I don't think so. Avast Log Viewer is a program, not a popup message.

It shouldn't be a memory problem either...
I bet on a bad avast installation, are you installing in the default folder?

I believe so then why did it work in safe mode?  and why it appears and goes off as I am rebooting?

I just ran a program called Regclean and t makes a reference to an invalid shortcut related to the warning file in Alwil

There is no Warning file in the log folder.  Regclean referecned the " Recent"  folder

Maybe a memory problem... which other applications are running?

and why it appears and goes off as I am rebooting?
Do you mean it popup and then disappear?
Hmmm...

Yes when I select turn off restart  it opens momentarily and then closes

Can I correct the " errors"  reported by by Regclean?
