No AVG 8 free edition?
« on: March 13, 2008, 10:48:56 PM »
I see that AVG Antvirus 8 is out, and I am pretty sure there is NO free edition.  Wouldn't this make avast! Home Edition the most popular free antivirus?

It's still there: you just have to have the link.

They did the same thing with AVG Free for Linux some time ago.

I can't find the free edition, all I can find is a free trial.

The new page doesn't mention the free version (only the free trial) but the old page is still up:

Eh eh... seems that Grisoft is making a bad movement... hiding the free version ;D

I never cared much about AVG...
What I DO mind though are the rumours(?) that free AVG AS (ewido) won't be around very long...

I don't either but it's good to have "free" competition around.
It keeps all vendor on their toes.  ;D

Without competition, we may loose all "free" antivirus services.

It isn't a rumour, AVG will become an anti-malware incorporating the anti-spyware (a.k.a. Ewido) into the anti-virus from version 8. From that point I don't know how long support in the form of signature updates, etc. will be available for avg-as.

As I'd mentioned somewhere else here, AVG 8 has also "absorbed" the former free stand-alone anti-rootkit.  And Grisoft has explicitly said they will no longer offer updates for (or support) the stand-alone version.

AVG 8 free edition will be available in the second quarter of 2008. It has an Anti-Virus / Anti-Spyware modul, but no Anti-Rootkit, no Webshield and only one update per day! ::)

AVG AS (Ewido) will be stopped!

I hope Alwil does not follow these steps... competition is good for freewares.
If avast become only a shareware (payed version), will we stay here in forums? ???
