Internet Mail Scanner running weird...

First off, hello!

I keep having this little "avast! Mail Scanner" running next to my icon for my speaker. Then when I click on the settings for avast, I see that the last e-mail scanned was an outgoing message titled "platonize" and it is from "Walter Cyphert"...only problem is...I don't know a Walter and I definitely did NOT send any e-mails out....what did my computer contract?

I ran:

SuperAntiSpyware
Avast Virus Removal
Lavasoft (AdWare Removal)
Spybot S&D
CCleaner

All was cleared and clean...but I still have this little...booger...

Please direct this to the appropriate forum, if I am in the wrong "room"...

I think your computer is compromised with spambots...
I suggest:

1. Disable System Restore and reenable it after step 3.
2. Clean your temporary files.
3. Schedule a boot time scanning with avast with archive scanning turned on.
4. Use SUPERantispyware and/or Spyware Terminator to scan for spywares and trojans. If any infection is detected, better and safer is send the file to Quarantine than to simple delete than.
5. Test your machine with anti-rootkit applications. I suggest avast! antirootkit or Trend Micro RootkitBuster.
6. Make a HijackThis log to post here or, better, submit the RunScanner log to to on-line analysis.
7. Immunize your system with SpywareBlaster or Windows Advanced Care.
8. Check if you have insecure applications with Secunia Software Inspector.

Hi, since you already did most of Tech's suggestions, you need a more specialized scan tool.

Please do not turn system restore off, a leaky boat is better than no boat at all. 

Download and run these two programs in the order posted.

Download SDFix and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.

In Safe Mode, double click SDFix.exe and install to the default location by clicking Install.  The SDFix Folder will be extracted to %systemdrive% \ (Drive that contains the Windows directory - typically 'C:\SDFix') Open the SDFix folder in Safe Mode then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the fixtool.  Type Y to begin the script.

It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.  Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.  When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log

• Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
• Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
• By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
• Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  
• Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  
• Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
• At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  
• Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  
• Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
• Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
• DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

AHA! I think with the help of Oldman and Tech....we might (MIGHT!) have cleared this annoying thing! I wonder..with the latest update from avast! (the other night around 12am)....what happened? Since, that was the day that I first noticed this pop up "....too many messages...."...

I uninstalled prevx...wow...a long long LONG time ago! ha!

so far...so good. no internet mail scanning popped up...with a weird title/names being sent on my behalf....

that was really....by far the weirdest thing encountered this week!

so...sdfix is PERMANENTLY in my system! ha! and so is that neat little virustotal thing...now that was way cool! loved it!

I didn't see anything "odd" in my list of hijackthis log...however...i had one "untitled" bho that i did delete and it does not seem to be affecting my system....should I worry about the "missing files" ....files? Mostly, they are "network diagnostics"...i thought it was "network associates *mcafee* and almost deleted them...but opted not to until i asked  your opinion...

I should have noticed that before. You are using an old version of HJT. It shows "missing files" when it fact the files are there.

I don't know how you ended up with that version from the link I posted. SDFix should be removed as it does get updated. If you ever have need for it again, you can redownload it.

This little utility will remove SDfix and HJT. Afterwards, use the HJT link in my earlier post to get a new version of HJT and post the log. We'll have a look.

* Please downloadOTCleanIt

Double click OTCleanIt, click the Clean Up button.

You may get prompted by your firewall that OTCleanit/OTMoveIt wants to contact the internet -  allow this.  A cleanup.txt will be downloaded, a message dialog will ask you if you want to proceed with the cleanup process, click Yes. This will delete all the tools you have downloaded plus itself

* Create a new restore point

You must be logged on to an administrator account
Go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore.
Click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
In the text box labeled Restore Point Description, type a name for this restore point , click create

* Remove old restore points

- Go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - system tools. Launch the Disk Cleanup tool and let it run. When it finishes a box with tabs will appear, select the more options tab. On this tab you will find a section for System Restore. If you press the Clean Up button for that section, Windows will delete all restore points except for the most recent one.

That's better. Just an update to do.

* Open an Internet Explorer (only) window and go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp > Scroll down to "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5...allows end-users to run Java applications".

Click the download button on the right.

 > If Information Bar pop-ups up, right-click on it and say it's OK to display the blocked content.

 You do not have to install the Java Web Start ActiveX Control


Accept the license agreement > Click on Windows (XP,Vista, .etc) Offline Installation, Multi-language and Save the file jre-6u5-windows-i586-p.exe to your desktop; do not Run it. Do not install it yet.

When the download is complete, Open Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs:

Uninstall anything that says Sun Java, Java JRE, or similar.

Close Add/Remove Programs.

In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\Java <=this folder, if found. Delete any subfolders it may contain.

Do NOT delete C:\Program Files\JavaVM <=this folder, if found!

Reboot your computer.

Double-click on the saved file to install the update.

Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure  and reboot if not prompted to do so.


* Clear the java cache

it seems the neighbors girls have been sneaking in my house to use the computer! hahahahahaha! i wonder if I should tell the mom and dad? all the files that were "temp" and "internet explorer" were from the neighbors folder! i was wondering where the silly "internet explorer" thing came from...as i only use mozilla....
