They are working on this in the labs trying to replicate the problem and then resolve it.

One important bit of information you don't say is What is your OS and are your Hard Disk partitions FAT32 format, as that seems to be the common link for those with the problem. So bearing that commonality it isn't conflict with other applications.

My error number remains the same, no change there, nothing to do really but wait for the resolution from avast.

My OS is XP SP2, HD partitions FAT32 format.

Hi DavidR,
Question... are you FAT32?  Don't see it in your sig line.

Yes, though you won't see that in my signature, nor will you see my inside leg measurement as for the most part it is irrelevant to the majority of issues ;D

Hello All,

Since my last post  a couple of days ago I have experimented somewhat and would add the following comments in the hope they might help improve the startup situation.

1) It seems to me that there is , not surprisingly, some conflict between applications which want to start at boot time.
In my case they are Avast!, Online Armor, WinPatrol and Sandboxie, although I prefer to have the latter start when needed.

I wasted half a day trying to manage the startup order to no avail since all three (Avast!,OA & WP) insist on stating first and cannot be delayed.

2) Thinking it prudent, after all that mucking about, I completely uninstalled Avast! 4.8, which had been upgraded from 4.7.
I reinstalled 4.8 from the downloaded exe file, and since then the startup situation has settled down and Avast!, OA and WP appear to be cooperating during startup.
I still get
Internal error has occurred in module aswar scan function failed!, function 00000001
each startup.

3) Can it be confirmed  that the Avast! rootkit scan on system startup has a 2 min. delay ? (Ref: Vlk elsewhere)
This might explain why sometimes the startup problem heals itself after a short delay.

Hope this helps those still having startup problems
i.e. try a clean reinstall from the exe file.

Maurice

How? Doing what?

You mean seconds instead of minutes?
On version 4.8 the boot speed was improved and not delayed...

Tech,

1) Wasted half day.
Since it seemed that startup problems might be due to conflict between several startup applications (Avast, Online Armor & WinPatrol), I thought it might help if I could arrange for them to start, one after the other.

WinPatrol has such a facility, however I found that the start of both Avast! and Online Armor cannot be delayed.

2) Delayed start for rootkit scan:

It may be that I misinterpreted Vlk's comments
Quote
It's clearly the automatic rootkit scan. It is starting (by default) 2 minutes after the service is launched.

On a "normal" system, it only takes a couple of seconds to complete. If it takes 15 minutes in your case, it is definitely worth investigating.
Endquote
here:-
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=34308.msg287594#msg287594

I connected "by default" with the "two minutes"
and now see that "default" should be connected to "automatic rootkit scan".

Sorry, I haven't yet found out how to properly post quotes and topic URLs. When I try, I keep getting logged out - so I copy what I want into Notepad and thence to the message being prepared..

Anyway, my system is currently behaving - but I fear more by good luck than good management.

Regards,
Maurice

How can I verify if the anti-rootkit module works?

Do you have Home or Pro (trial) version?

XP: Windows Start > Run
"C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe" "<RTK>SUPERQUICK"

Vista: Windows Start > write "cmd" without quotes > click CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER
Anwswer 'Yes' to UAC question.
Write down (or paste):
"C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe" "<RTK>SUPERQUICK"
Click Enter

Did that, the scan started and finished with no problems.
This proves that the anti-rootkit module works?
