to update the program update you just rightclick on the avast!-symbol in the taskbar go to 'update' and then choose 'program-update'
then the new program-version should be downloaded and installed

Probably you're using a very old program version... which is it? You can go to 'About' dialog of the context menu of the 'a' blue icon on system tray.

the only possibility to update without an internet-connection (on the computer with avast) is download the actual program or vps-installer from the homepage (on an other computer with internet connection)...
for VPS-updates:
http://avast.com/eng/update_avast_4_vps.html
for program-updates:
http://avast.com/eng/programs.html
(download the normal installation package)
