You shouldn't have to as there was a previous modification to enable the use of USB keyboards.

I would suggest that you check your BIOS settings and see if USB devices are enabled on boot. It is most likely to be in the Integrated Peripherals section of the BIOS/CMOS but that could be different as there is no standard for the layout, or how to access the BIOS. For me as my system is booting I keep clicking the Delete key (for some it may be the F1 key), and select the Integrated Peripherals from the first screen, or you may have to go looking.

I don't know if you might have to have a ps2 keyboard to do this.

Does this problem appear only in version 4.8 or you've never tested before with version 4.7.
Which is this computer (specifications) and your operational system?

avast does not change any BIOS setting and won't install drivers that avoid your usb keyboard to be detected... but you can test disabling the self-protection module (and the antirootkit scanning) into the Troubleshooting tab of settings to see if they make any difference in this case.

I wouldn't have though either of those would have any effect in a boot-time scan as windows hasn't started yet, which would mean neither had avast.

You're right... but just in case we're missing something here... it won't harm a test...
