Giraffe, could you please send me an export of the registry key HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\aswSP ?
My hypothesis is that the self-defense module in avast does not verify any of the avast binaries as "trusted" which leads to all the problems you're describing. It would be very interesting to find out why this is the case. And the key to this may be in that registry key.

Thanks
Vlk

As above, apologies for the delay.
Zip sent by e-mail.

Thanks for this Vlk

Please, post the last 200-250 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log

Sorry for the delay - been out and about.

Here's the log from 2nd.

Yes, Comodo 2.4. It has been asking me about Avast quite frequently.

Here's a shot:

For me... seems it fails, not succeed.

Giraffe, can you delete the avast.setup entries from Comodo and try again (allowing it to connect)?

Yes Tech. Allowed all requests when asked. Looks similar to before; also seem to be duplicates (CFP 2.4 does seem to 'forget' things).
The updates are working well, with no reboot required.

Still can't make most Program Settings 'stick.

Licence Key still not accepted - bit worried as to what will happen at the end of May.

(Tried to post this last night, but the server seemed to be out of action).

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
4. Boot.
5. Install again the latest avast! version.
6. Boot and then add the License key.
7. Check and post the results.

Yes, I'm afraid you're right. I've been trying to avoid this, but...  :'(

I'll have a go and report back.

Well, thanks to those who have given me advice. Did as Tech said (apologies Tech - just a bit reluctant to go through it all again) and everything is now working. The Licence Key is in, options are holding and no reboot required.

This is why I stay with Avast: so much help and rapid reaction to any software problems (thanks Vlk). It's like Opera and Comodo: quality and service are the most important.

Happy now and enjoying the odd pint or 6 of Stella!

Glad you've finally win...
Anyway, my experience with Comodo support is that it's very much weaker than avast...

Thanks Tech.

Not sure about Comodo support. I know that you've had your issues, but at least Comodo allows adverse comments and downright criticism (always a good sign), unlike some other firewalls. Other than that I can not comment, as my knowledge of firewalls is pitiful!

Sorry Vlk, I sent it this morning. I'm not too sure of the e-mail client, so I've sent it again.

Just a quick update now the re-install's been running for a couple of days: everything seems to be working properly and no repeat of the previous problems.
Many thanks to all those who gave advice - made me happy again!
