wursti, it's difficult to guess...
Can you check the folder <avast>\data\log
Are there any files called unpXXXX there  (where XXXX is a random number)?
If so, send them to vlk (at) avast.com
They may contain more information about the problem (maybe a link to this thread).

Answering your question Vlad (scary abbreviation) hehehehe    but during the 5 minutes delay the desktop is empty without the taskbar

I've seen negative interaction between avast! 4.8, WinPatrol and Process Explorer. If all 3 were set to start with Windows (PE by inserting a shortcut in the 'startup' folder) the Taskbar and desktop icons would appear but then the tasbar immediately disappear for a few minutes during which no disk or network activity was apparent. Clicking the 'My computer' desktop icon during this period would open the menu box but no icons, just white space with a border. Then suddenly the taskbar appeared and tray icons loaded as quickly as usual. Removing any one of the 3 solved the problem (At the moment it's Winpatrol).

Have you tried (temporarily) removing Online Armour?

Well actually I was wondering about Online Armor, but I'm already I have been very busy testing this version and I'm sort of getting tired  (in the good sense), so I will let it go, and leave the program as it is.

Just wanted to add something to this thread that might be of use.

I did not originally have any problem with freeze at boot (not for a while).

But I DID have a problem that "steam.exe" (the Valve onlien game client) freezes for one minute at start. And this issue has started latelty (never was like this before).

But after I installed XP SP3 I too got the freeze at boot (just after desktop appears) and I downloaded the lastest beta to test...

And guess what. Not only did it solve the boot issue, but "steam.exe" no longer freezes as well.

Thought that might me interesting to now...

I have the same exact problem except for one weird thing. Avast told me I had a trojan infect one of my files. So I ran a system scan when my computer booted up (blue screen and everything). Ever since then I have the desktop freeze issue. Now I restored everything that was put into the Avast chest but that didn't work. The only thing I can do is hit ctrl+alt+del --->file --->run --->C: and everything pops up instantly. I still don't have any of my startup items working so I need to go and turn on all the programs manually. This lead me to cancel and uninstall Avast because everything was working fine until then.

I have the same exact problem except for one weird thing.

We will need more information to be able to help you:
- Which OS are you using? Is it up to date?
- What avast! version number?
- Do you use a firewall? Which one?
- Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system?  Did you have in the past?
- Any other security programs that could interfere?
- In XP/Vista, is there any useful information into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, specially 'Errors'?

I have just prog update to 4.8.1229, and am now experiencing this problem. Can anyone tell me if there was ever an outcome, other than to say "Let's wait for the next build" - cos that has now caused the problem for me.

I've tried the Settings >> Troubleshooot >> Disable root scan and that didn't work. I am loathe to try the untick indexing solution as this really is interfering with the normal workings of windows (as someone else has said).

Is the any way I can 'undo' this latest update?
