HP OfficeJet printer won't load following Avast 4.8 update

Help!  Everything was fine until the latest update of Avast and now my printer won't load at all.  The screen freezes and I have to switch off.  It loads fine if I switch off HP Office Jet printer.  I'm running Windows XP.  I need the printer urgently - please help!!  I've spent a few hours trying to crack it myself until I found this forum.  Thanks.

avast should block anything... it's just an antivirus.
Were you using the version 4.7 before updating or this is a new installation?
If you disable avast, will the printer work?
If you boot in Safe Mode, can you print?

I was using 4.7 before without problems.
I disabled avast and the printer now works, have turned avast back on, obviously!
