We will need more information to be able to help you:
- Which OS are you using? Is it up to date?
- What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number?
- Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system?  Did you have in the past?
- Any other security programs that could interfere?

OS: XP Professional. It is up to date.
Avast! version 4.8 Home Edition, VPS file: 080413-0.
I have only Avast. There are not other security programs that are running in services. I have not installed other antivirus programmes.

Strange... seems a firewall blocking or some old antivirus (OEM) not well uninstalled...

I have the same problem with Avast 4.8.
In my situation, the operating system is Windows Vista Service Pack 1. I've tried both official release 4.8 and the new beta version.
The problem occurs random, after reboot, the Web Shield does not work. Everything seems to be normal, except the browsing: nothing loads in Firefox, the website is reached, started to load but nothings come in, blank page and 0 files counted in Web Shield statistics. If I terminate the service, everything in back to normal. If a start again the service, the browsing is normal, again, but the Web Shield statistics are still stuck at 0.
At the next reboot, most of the time, everything will run very well again.

No other antivirus, antispyware, firewall or something like that.

Some problems are difficult to troubleshoot...
Can you activate logging in WebShield?
1. Disable avast self-defense module: Program settings > Troubleshooting tab of settings.
2. Edit <avast>\data\avast4.ini file with Notepad.
3. Find the section [WebScanner]
4. Add the line:
    EnableLogging=1
5. Restart Web Shield in XP\Vista (terminate and start again) or whole PC in case of Win98
6. Browse (trying to access some webpages)

The log file are <avast>\data\log\ashwebsv.log and ashwebsv.ws.
They would be accessible when WebShield is terminated again.
Post them here or send by mail to rypacek (at) asw.cz
After that, disable the logging to avoid a big log file.

Oh, enable the self-defense module again after that.
If Lukas (rypacek) does not answer you... let us know... I'm not sure he's around. He seems to have disappeared from the forums...
