I have the same problem. Hope someone comes up with a solution!

P.S. I have just re-downloaded avast!, and have the very same problem again - think I might give up and go back to Norton.

Come back to Norton is not necessary  ;D
What are your OS?
Probably you do not have the latest Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) that could be found at their website.

Maybe if you open the <avast>\data\avast4.ini file and in the [Common] section, change the item Database=ODBC to Database=XML. This could prevent the Microsoft Jet drivers from accessing the database...

Maybe, other solution could be just uninstalling/boot/installing/boot...

Thank you, Technical,
I tried your suggestion of replacing "Database=ODBC" with "Database=XML" in avast4 Configuration Settings (Windows XP) and the error messages have stopped. Avast seems to be working just fine now.
Thanks again,
