I'm having pretty much the same problem with avast 4.8 on 2 computers.
After system startup i can access internet websites and/or start downloads.
After some time all downloads will stop (not abort, just stop downloading) and any website called will load forever without any result or error message shown.
Note that i can still access FTP sites without problem.
Also other internet services are still working properly (teamspeak or multiplayer online games).
It seems that only port (or protocol) for internet is blocked.
No matter which browser is used (i tested with IE, Firefox 2 and Firefox 3 Beta)
If the described situation occurs, there is no way to get it running again until you do a complete system reboot - you are not even able to kill system process for the browser from windows task manager.
The same problem also occurs with p2p software (eMule) although there is not used port 80.

If i disable avast (or at least the web shield and p2p shield) the problem seems not to occure (tested only 2 days).

my system is following:
OS: Vista (32bit) with SP1 installed
avast (home edition) v4.8.1201 - VPS: 080606-1, no other anti virus software installed
Firewall: ZoneAlarm (free version) v7.1.254, windows firewall is turned off, windows defender activated
Browsers tested with: Firefox 3.0 RC1, Firefox 2, IE v7.0.6001

i also use a dsl router with integrated firewall, all worked well before avast was updated to 4.8

is there any solution for this problem available? (except disabling web shield and p2p shield)

feel free to ask for more system details if needed

In the pro version, it's the same place as webshield. In the home version, it doesn't exist.

Avast 4.8 Home
All browsers are blocked
I try IE 7, Opera9.50, FireFox2 and 3 - nothing

FF3:
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.
IE7:
Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage
Opera9.50
just blank page without any messages

All other network services ( iRC, p2p, mail[Firebird]) work.
If i press on "Stop On-Access Protection" all start work fine.
I try to switch off separate providers, but no luck.

is there any solution yet?

Have you read the start of this topic as I'm sure the usual questions and suspects are mentioned, like your firewall (not mentioned) blocking ashwebsv.exe (did you terminate the Web Shield) ?

Both me and my girlfriend have the same problems with Avast 4.8.

We both run Vista 32, now on SP1, but her problems started before SP1.

We both use ZoneAlarm also.

Our browsers (usually Firefox 3.xx) work to begin with, then stop being able to access the internet after a random time.  There seems no pattern to this.

My girlfriend can sometimes use IE7 for a while after, but this then stops.  I also have problems when using only Opera.

The only way I have found to fix it is to close all browsers (although sometimes they refuse to close down completely, leaving the process running,) and turn Avast off and on again.  This seems to resolve the problem temporarily.

We both use ZoneAlarm also.
Remove the avast entries from ZA and boot, allowing next the following programs to connect:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable). This is a temporary file that just appears when an update (check) is about to launch, and disappears again afterwards.
