Infected with Win32:tratbho [trj]
« on: April 22, 2008, 06:33:30 PM »
First I would like to say that the only way I was able to post was through Safe Mode with Networking. My browsers, both Firefox and IE (I never use IE otherwise), were not able to get past google in a normal boot setting if you could believe it.

My girl has had this dell M1530 for less then a week now, and last night I decided to spend some times making it more secure.I downloaded drivers from dells site, downloaded adblock for FF, avast, comodo installed it all, seemed just fine. In the morning we wake up and watch a movie on it, no problems at all. Then some errors popped up and we surmised it was an infection, even though we had no clue on why. I uninstalled comodo, (dont know why), and checked avast and apparently it found something but didn't react -_-... when running a manual scan it found it in no time, and asked me what to do so I put it in a chest. It kept on finding it after and asked that I do a boot time scan to which I agreed. The scan ran into some infected files first and I chose to delete (if it worked at all anyway). Then it found the virus I posted, and I typed it into my blackberry and found this site. After I "deleted" the file, I had to manually restart the PC to which vista said it recommended that I launch a startup repair which I did. I chose to do it without a system restore, because I wasn't sure if there was one available to begin with. After that windows started up and would have errors and explorer would not respond and close repeatedly. then the browsers crapped out on me. Wish I knew what the heck it came from. So what should I do first guys? I have another PC on hand if it helps to know. Thanks in advance. Heres a HiJack This Log, in Safe Mode with Networking

O13 - Gopher Prefix
O20 - AppInit_DLLs

Could be fixed.
I also suggest:

1. Disable System Restore and reenable it after step 3.
2. Clean your temporary files.
3. Schedule a boot time scanning with avast with archive scanning turned on.
4. Use SUPERantispyware and/or Spyware Terminator to scan for spywares and trojans. If any infection is detected, better and safer is send the file to Quarantine than to simple delete than.
5. Test your machine with anti-rootkit applications. I suggest avast! antirootkit or Trend Micro RootkitBuster.
The best things in life are free.

O13 - Gopher Prefix  is a legitamate vista HJT entry.

HJt in safe mode is pretty sparse, but this one shows some of the infection.

Download this program, closely follow the instructions, both for downloading and running.

NOTE
As a Vista user, you will have to right click and run as administrator.

Please run the program in safe mode, then boot to normal windows and get a fesh HJT log.

It is vitally important that combofix is renamed before it is even started to download

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note:  In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

  • If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

     -Tools->Options->Main tab
-Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

  • During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

  • It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
  • Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix
-----------------------------------------------------------
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.[/color]
    -----------------------------------------------------------
  • Close any open browsers.
  • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
  • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
  • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
-----------------------------------------------------------
  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts. Remember right click combofix.exe
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

@ crisp714
What little detail in the Safe Mod HJT log shows your JAVA is slightly out of date. So when you get a break in the battle you need to update.

Ensure you have the latest version of JRE (JAVA Runtime Environment) because older versions can be vulnerable to malware. First remove All Older Versions From Add/Remove Programs.
Then get the latest update from here http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Or JRE version 6 update 6 http://www.majorgeeks.com/Sun_Java_Runtime_Environment_d4648.html
