Win32:Agent + Win32:Zhelatin + many outgoing smtp connections from svchost.exe

Hi!
I have a problem which a-vast does not seem to solve.
My computer makes many smtp connections and avast detects and deletes many Win32:Agent files.
Scheduling a boot time scan finds 2-3 Win32:Zhelatin, Win32:Rootkit and Win32:Agent viruses and deletes them, but after the computer boots the virus returns.

All smtp connection seem to originate from a svchost.exe, killing it stops the smtp connections but they come up on the next boot.

It's so frustrating that I've set a-vast to delete automaticlly all viruses it finds....

Is there anything I can do, short of reinstalling windows? Any ideas?

What is the infected file name, where was it found e.g. (C:\windows\system32\infected-file-name.xxx) ? 
Check the avast! Log Viewer (right click the avast 'a' icon), Warning section, this contains information on all avast detections.

1. What is your firewall ?
I would suggest that you don't allow svchost automatic access to the internet, the only time I know it does access the internet is for windows update, so it may be allowed trusted access and some malware will take advantage of that trusted status.

In the past I have blocked svchost from any internet access and only just before the monthly WU patch Tuesday, etc. would I temporarily allow it access.

2. Set the avast Internet Mail provider, Customize, Sensitivity to High. This should detect these multiple identical email in a short time period, so that should also help to block them. So if you have set avast to delete automatically I assume you have the Pro version of avast ?

Deletion isn't really a good first option (you have none left), 'first do no harm' don't delete, send virus to the chest and investigate. Obviously if you are only deleting viruses from the Internet Mail provider, fine, but for other providers the safe option is to move to the chest and investigate.

There appears to be a) another element hiding or restoring these files, an undetected trojan downloader, b) using svchost to send the email. Which again begs the question what is your firewall as it should be capable of blocking unauthorised outbound Internet Connections.

3. If you haven't already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it, preferably in safe mode and report the findings (it should product a log file).
If using winXP or Vista SUPERantispyware On-Demand only in free version.

Hai DavidR or anyone,

Pls help me too. I'm facing the same problem here.
there's a win32:trojan-gen virus found by avast (home ed) dated 4/15/08.
and I've took action to delete it.

but today, 4/25/08 the virus has activity of mass mailing through internet connection.
and avast detect it as win32:agent-VGV and win32:agent {others} that infected OVC.sys, a worm or trojan.

after following the process of avast by renaming and conduct a start up scanning system, I choose to delete the file.

but when I try to connect the internet, the virus come up and infecting other file, wel74.sys.

and I know that there's an unknown application installed and running at startup (some kind named welcome ... but I've remove it). but whenever I restart, the virus still do the same activity.

is this a new virus?
there's a post of win32:agent {others} but old post, 2005.

I've download 2 cleaner mentioned above, but my computer still running thorough scan through safemode. it will takes some hours. I'll post my log after that.

and should i need a hijackthis! software to get a full log ?
if yes, where can I get the safe program?

avast could detect the virus, but why it cannot solve it?

First a couple of points on your HJT log.
1. You don't appear to have an active firewall, it should be capable of blocking unauthorised outbound Internet Connections.

What is your firewall ?

2. Your version of JAVA is way out of date.
Ensure you have the latest version of JRE (JAVA Runtime Environment) because older versions can be vulnerable to malware. First remove All Older Versions From Add/Remove Programs.
Then get the latest update from here http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Or JRE version 6 update 6 http://www.majorgeeks.com/Sun_Java_Runtime_Environment_d4648.html

The above two issues could well leave your system vulnerable to attack.

Having run SAS it would probably be better to run HJT again as it may have dealt with some of the issues that were there. Please switch of the word wrap in Notepad as this is splitting the lines. It is under the Menu items on the top, Format and uncheck Word Wrap.

You can set the sensitivity as high as you like it doesn't protect against unauthorised outbound connections.

Windows XP's firewall is better than no firewall but, it lulls you into a false sense of protection, it doesn't provide outbound protection.

Whilst the windows XP firewall is usually good at keeping your ports stealthed (hidden) it provides no outbound protection and you should consider a third party firewall.

Any malware that manages to get past your defences will have free reign to connect to the internet to either download more of the same, pass your personal data (sensitive or otherwise, user names, passwords, keylogger retrieved data, etc.) or open a backdoor to your computer, so outbound protection is essential.

- There are many freeware firewalls such as, Comodo, PCTools Firewall Plus, Jetico, etc. - Zone Alarm free works fine with avast and has a reasonably friendly user interface, however, the free version is becoming bloated with trial ware and is also crippled as far as outbound protection goes In the Program Control, configuration area, the slider will only goes as far as Medium protection, if you want more you have to buy the Pro version.

thx David, I've installed the online armor firewall, update the latest java, and here's the steps that I've followed from other avast forum.

1. Disable System Restore and reenable it after step 3.
2. Clean your temporary files.
3. Schedule a boot time scanning with avast with archive scanning turned on.
4. Use SUPERantispyware and/or Spyware Terminator to scan for spywares and trojans. If any infection is detected, better and safer is send the file to Quarantine than to simple delete than.
5. Test your machine with anti-rootkit applications. Trend Micro RootkitBuster.
6. Make a HijackThis log to post here
7. Check if you have insecure applications with Secunia Software Inspector.

Is Online Armor actually running in your system tray as a) one of the HJT analysis sites doesn't recognise it as a firewall and b) not active. This may just be because it is relatively new and the analysis site doesn't recognise it as a firewall application, but best to confirm it is running.

I have winXP Pro and I don't have this as a Winlogon O20 entry, I also don't have a winnt32.dll file on my system.

Upload the file to VirusTotal - Multi engine on-line virus scanner and report the findings of these files here. If any are detected by multiple scanners send example to avast, see below.

Send the sample to virus@avast.com zipped and password protected with the password in email body, a link to this topic might help andundetected malware in the subject.

Or you can also add the file to the User Files (File, Add) section of the avast chest where it can do no harm and send it from there (select the file, right click, email to Alwil Software). No need to zip and PW protect when the sample is sent from chest. A copy of the file/s will remain in the original location, so any further action you take can remove that.
