Norton is well-known by being a resource hog.
I don't experience problems with old AVG installations (but it was a lot of time ago).
Welcome to avast forums and feel free to ask for help (if you need) ;)

@cooljays: I just left AVG as well. Never tried ver 8 because of all of the problems on the AVG forum. I loved 7.5 but so what if they're going to discontinue it! I also object to the default install of toolbars in ver 8.

Avast! uses more resources than 7.5 did but on my machine it is just slightly noticeable (Win XP SP2 32 bit, AMD Athlon 64x2 4800 running at 2.5 gig, 1 gig mem).

Have used Avast! on two Vista Home Premium machines for a year now and absolutely no problems.

Good luck! :)

The resources are something you can't compare as AVG have some resources being used at kernel level and they don't show up on the task manager attributed to AVG, but they are still using resources.

I have used AVG paid versions on one of my PCs for several years. I upgraded to AVG 8 and two days later downgraded back to AVG 7.5 Malware. When my subscription to AVG expires I will not renew it. AVG 8 has less user control, has an ugly user interface, and is slower. AVG is not for me. I will not use any antivirus software that becomes a problem in it's self.

I don't know why companies feel the need to mess with a proven product... AVG adding Anti-spyware to their product (AVG-AS will not be supported past the end of this year).  McAfee did the same thing when they changed VS-7 to 8 and beyond. That's why I left them 2 or 3 years ago... didn't like the 'bloat-ware'.  I first started using McAfee when it would fit on a floppy!

I'm a little concerned with avast adding AS and rootkit detection.  We'll see how that goes.

Welcome any/all "new" avast! users!
I've been using avast! on-and-off since 2002. I've used all the other free ones (and some paid) on my home PC from time to time but I always seem to come back to avast!
If I may misquote .: Mac :.  "avast! is not perfect, other AVs just make it seem that way."

The resources are something you can't compare as AVG have some resources being used at kernel level and they don't show up on the task manager attributed to AVG, but they are still using resources.

Part of AVG 7.5's speed was because the resident scanner was inside the Windows kernel but I think this is no longer the case with the rewrite to 8.0.

In a "past life" as Service Manager for a highly-respected Swedish industrial equipment manufacturer, one of the strongest lessons I came away with is that there is no product more beloved and praised by your customers than the one you've just replaced!  ;D Seriously though, avast! 4.8 detects both viruses and spyware with one scanner. AVG 8.0 has incorporated AVG AS (Ewido). On-demand scans are separate tasks. I'm pretty sure real-time is too.

I can't recall if it was Vlk or Igor I asked about the advantages and disadvantages of loading inside the kernel, but the major disadvantage was if it crashed then it crashed the system. Perhaps that is a consideration if it is no longer the practice in version 8.

I also decided to uninstall AVG 8 Free.
Now I installed Avast! 4.8 and only the On-Access scanner is installed and active.

I'm very glad that alternative options are available, thank you very much!

Until now, working perfectly together. More protection, not that much resources, no conflicts ;)
