Wow... a new log... I haven't noticed it.
In fact, I can't find it... where is it located?
But we can't access it through avast Log Viewer... :'(

It's in the logs folder with the others.

BTW - it could do with a viewer since it is just an unformatted continuous stream of the error messages.

All the errors in my file were file access denied popups related to my testing with Outlook.  Since I restored my system after the streams of registry access denied popups when trying to install SP3 I do not know if the registry denials are logged yet.  Maybe Igor could let us know.

Maybe the self-defense didn't block anything for you yet? (with 1192)

I have a 0KB selfdef.log I have had no self-defence alerts in 4.8.1192, but have had previous self-defence alerts about avast4.ini and changing the clean notes, etc. but there is no record of that in the log.

So was this selfdef.log added with 1192 and if so it is strange that I have a 0KB file but Tech has no file.

On my WinXP SP2 system the selfdef.log was first created during the reboot after the installation of avast 4.8.1192, it may well have been created as a 0Kb file. Shortly thereafter I tested the issue of popups with Outlook so the first items in the log appeared then.

My system's log space has been exhausted by the WinXP SP3 installation tests (and system reversals) with 1192 and 1187 so I cannot go back and check the exact details of its creation.

Perhaps the 0Kb file is not created in a Vista system.

I said:

Just to confirm that registry denials are also logged in selfdef.log with avast 4.8.1195.  I got more than 4200 of them logged during the installation of WinXP SP3.

Speaking of logging - I also note that avast 4.8.1195 introduced a new aswAr.log that logs the last rootkit scan.

Edit: corrected my avast version typo - thanks David.

I don't believe it was introduced with 4.8.1195 I believe I saw it with an earlier build as my creation date for that file is 08/05/2008 and Date Modified of 13/5/2008.

It looks like it overwrites the existing file as it is a very large amount of data to append to an existing log or the size would soon be huge.

Good point - looks like mine was created shortly after updating to VPS 080506-0 with build 1187.

Might be nice to have the end time of the scan in the log too.  I am a bit puzzled by some reports of the scan taking minutes and consuming 100% CPU - while mine (run manually via ashquick) takes only a few seconds.  I believe you mentioned yours is fast too.

One thing that occurs to me (it may be a factor in a couple of other scan threads too) is that I have Windows restore disabled since I have alternatives I consider superior.  Do you have system restore enabled?

Agreed an end time would be a great help in when we say the rootkit scan should take seconds and not minutes and that would confirm that, or indicate that there is a problem with the rootkit scan that needs further investigation.

I did the ashquick.exe rootkit scan and although I didn't time it there was no apparent slowness. Since we can't say how long the scan after boot takes I can't comment, but I certainly don't see any High CPU usage or noticeable slow down on my system after about 5 minutes after the desktop is up (when I believe the rootkit scan takes place).

No I too have system restore disabled on my system. I don't have confidence in system restore as it can either have unforeseen consequences besides the fact that it often fails, not being able to restore a restore point. I have been using Drive Image weekly disk images for many years now as my replacement for system restore.
