hello,
I have the avast gui in the desktop menu on ubuntu. does it run as root then and how is that done  ?

Not quite sure what you mean by 'I have the avast gui in the desktop menu on ubuntu.'

There are a couple of commands you need to run in a terminal to have avast! appear in the Applications/Accessories menu:

If I'm not wrong it does not ask for root access while loading...
I'm not on Linux right now, but I think it runs at user level.
