Problem with latest update 4.8.1201
« on: May 16, 2008, 06:58:23 PM »
Noticed this morning a new update.  Updated and it said it needed to restart.  When I did that just my desktop loaded and nothing else for a good five minutes.  I was scared to death something was really wrong and I didn't have a clue as to how to fix it.  What was in the last update to cause this?  I just waited and waited and finally everything loaded - Avast, Online Armour, AdMuncher, Accelerator Program and a desktop calendar.  Any ideas what to do or should I revert back to the previous version and if so where can I get a copy of it.  I have never had a problem with Avast updates before this and I love the program.  Thanks

Am using Win XP SP 2
XP/SP3, Intel Pentium 4, 992MB Ram, Avast 2014 Free, Chrome  with ABP , Private  Firewall 7.0,  MBAM, WinPatrol and Thunderbird 24.6.0

Before doing anything, have you tried just rebooting a couple of times?

What's your OS?
W7 Pro SP1 32 bit
Intel Core i5 5675C; 4GB DDR3 1600 RAM
Avast!: 2328; Comodo Firewall

That's the problem.  When I reboot it takes a good 5 minutes before anything loads.  This just started happening after the update this morning.  Operating system is Win XP SP 2.

Just went into Troubleshooting and disabled Rootkit scan at startup.  Rebooted and things started normally.  I did not have this disabled in the previous version.  Is there anything I can do to correct it or do I have to leave it disabled?

I have no such issue on winXP Pro SP2 and my system is no speed freak.

What other security software is on your system ?
With 4.8.1201 there is a log created by the rootkit scan C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\aswAr.log.

Open this using notepad, at the top 'header' information there is a start time, at the bottom, 'footer' information is the end time, using these two how long does the scan take ?

Example mine started at 14:49 and ended at 14:50 so that is one minute and even that is likely to be less as there is no seconds recorded in the start and end time to get a more accurate picture.

Just an additional comment to DavidR's ...

the scan does not actually run immediately at system startup at all (the times in the log DavidR has referred you too should confirm this).  The scan is currently set to run 8 minutes after the system startup.

It is puzzling that changing that setting seems to have affected your initial startup slowdown.  It might prove interesting to see if turning it on again later brings back the same startup issue.

Thanks Alan I forgot to mention that bit as it is strange that for five minutes nothing loads yet the rootkit scan doesn't start for 8 minutes, interesting.

Thanks for the info. I'll update the avast4.ini file thread.

I think it was Vlk that said they are still considering the final start point for this scan, so 8 minutes may not be the final delay.

Anyway... if it changes in the future, I'll change the avast4.ini file thread again.
I wish to be informed, just this.

Okay, went back and enabled the startup rootkit scan and restarted and it works fine now.  Rebooted at 7:12 and checked the log and it began at 7:21:24 and ended at 7:21:28.  So that wasn't the problem.  I have a new problem now.  Am using Firefox  and when I open it it freezes up on me.  Am using IE to post this.  My other security programs are SpywareBlaster SuperAntiSpyware(on demand) and Online Armour.  Any suggestions.  I don't want to give up Firefox.
